COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It has been a year since we released ’00 and, as promised, we have brewed up another “extreme” Storm. Like its predecessor, only 20 barrels of ’01 will ever be brewed. Five malts and three hop varieties, along with a special ingredient chosen for the ’01, combine to create another exceptional and unique beer. It was brewed during the winter of 2001 and aged for almost a year before its release. Like most products with such robust ingredients, time increases the complexity of the ’01 and allows more subtle characteristics to be noticed as stronger flavors subside. Although ready to drink now, this beer will continue to get better for years to come. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: “It’s All About Extremes!”

Bottle. Pours dark brown with a small, fizzy, off-white head, diminishing with spare lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, toffee), heavy hops (perfume), average yeast (dough) with notes of dates, alcohol, brown sugar, and vanilla. Full bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and an astringent-dry-spicy. Long duration, heavy sweetness, moderate acidity and bitterness.

Bottle shared by iowaherkeye or possibly pepsican. Thanks to both of you. That should cover it. Poured a ruby brown color with a light tan head. Big malty nose with molasses, caramel, and dark fruits. There was also a papery oxidation note. Medium bodied and slightly sweet. Big malt bill with lots of molasses and a little dog food in the flavor. There was some white paper as well.

Deep copper pour with tan head and lace. Deep raisin aroma. Sweet fruity flavor with dried fruit oozing from it. Good carbonation and mouthfeel. Very nice BW. I really liked this beer.

Bottled shared at Noog4 thanks to a trade from McBackus. Chestnut pour with a wispy head. Very bright aroma with fruit and caramel and touches of honey. There is a bit of cardboard to the flavor but it’s not too distracting or noticeable. This seems to have held up quite well. Caramel, honey, light malt, and any hop presence still left are unidentifiable. Good. Creamy medium mouth feel and body. An enjoyable age experiment.

Tasted at Noogfest 4.0 (2008). This Barley Wine pours a medium brown color from a 750ml bottle. Small sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel and sweet, with some sherry and a touch of oxidation. A medium bodied Barley Wine. The malts are caramel and sweet. The hops are earthy. This beer is definitely an older barley wine, it is developing that woody oxidation flavor, and the hop profile is fading. Might be a little past its prime. Mouthfeel is full. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

Bottle at Noogfest 08. Pours a deep amber with an off white, yellowish head. Aroma is boozy, with some hints of caramel and sherry. There is flavor of maple and caramel, but the hop bitterness seems to have mellowed quite a bit. There is some sherry and cardboard like oxidization starting to creep in as well. Warming and peppery finish. Sort of a let down. I am curious to try the 02, but that fucker Ross won’t send it to me.
