COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It has been a year since we released ’00 and, as promised, we have brewed up another “extreme” Storm. Like its predecessor, only 20 barrels of ’01 will ever be brewed. Five malts and three hop varieties, along with a special ingredient chosen for the ’01, combine to create another exceptional and unique beer. It was brewed during the winter of 2001 and aged for almost a year before its release. Like most products with such robust ingredients, time increases the complexity of the ’01 and allows more subtle characteristics to be noticed as stronger flavors subside. Although ready to drink now, this beer will continue to get better for years to come. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: “It’s All About Extremes!”

Cleveland tasting

This was another one of those beers that I never expected to see. The chance to try it makes me want to seek out the 2004 and 2005 releases. This one might be a little over the hill. If you have a bottle and aren’t drinking perhaps you should just send it my way to be disposed of safely.

Aroma / Appearance - The pour had no life to it after seven years. Cherry, wood and the scent of two day old pine resin were a solid indication that this barleywine has mellowed after so much time.

Flavor / Palate - Much to my suprise the first sip was richer than I expected. Chocolate, creamy resin and toffee kept things interesting. The mouthfeel was dense and chewy. It was nice to slow down and spend some time with this after the rush to get through so many of the other beers. I’m not sure how many years it has left but if I ever get the chance to try this again I’ll going to take the opportunity.

Bottle brought to the kp cellar party by TBC, many thanks!

Coppery hued with a frothy head and spotty lace. The aroma has notes of caramel, toffee, fig, tobacco, hop spices, anise, spearmint and is vinous on the nose, NICE!

The taste has rich dark malts along with a fruity and spicy nature, some marzipan and wintergreen as well. The mouth feel is shockingly smooth, oily and wonderfully warming. THIS ROCKS! Great balanced and depth of palate, a must try for any ratebeerian IMO.

Shared at Cleveland tasting 3/15 Bottle: Pours a clear copper color with a tan head. Aroma, fruits, caramel, some raisins, brown sugar. Flavor, dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, sweet finish, a little boozy. But very solid.

Bottle shared at the Cleveland tasting. Not sure who shared it. Sorry! But I am awfully glad I got to try this one!!! Poured a hazy dark copper color. Smelled great! Like carmalized nuts! Flavor was sweet malty goodness! Lots of fruit. Apples. Plums. Alchol hit me hard on this one. Very good barley wine!

Appearance: Pours a murky brown body. No amount of shaking or swirling can cause a head to appear. Oh well. Smell: Aroma rich in dark fruitiness with a vein of tartness running through it. A splash of sherry. Plenty of rich dark caramel. Taste: Heavily sweet, earthy caramel maltiness with an extra hearty scoop of dark brown sugar. Dried dark fruits. Light oxidation. Touch of alcohol along the way. Especially candylike on the finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Mild carbonation. Decidedly chewy mouthfeel. Drinkability: I could use a bit more carbonation in here, but otherwise it’s a rather fine barleywine.

Big maris otter malts, a bunch of licorice, prickly pear, warm caramel. Smooth with a great complex flavor, pear, grape, nice sherry oxidation. A little hot, but very calm and clean. A delicious beer that has aged wonderfully. Big thanks to Cryotek for sending this gem my way.

Bottle, thanks to puzzl. Hazy brown pour, a little muddy. Aroma is alcohol, aged malt, and a little citrus. Flavor is some dark fruit, lighty spicy malt from the alcohol. Decent.

Well aged. No carbonation at all, but good flavor and aroma. Sweet with lots of sugar. Some caramel, fermenting fruit. Some hops. Nice, smooth mouthfeel, great on the palate. Very light oak.
