COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The '02 represents the third edition of our limited release beer. As in the past, this beer has been brewed with a completely new recipe and follows no particular style guidelines. Again, the 20 barrels of limited production '02 was aged for almost a year before it was released. This year's version is made with a single malt, Marris Otter, which our brewers believe to be the best in the world. In addtion, a variety of hops were added to achieve the 100 IBUs (International Bitterness Units) which creates a distinctive yet surprisingly smooth bite. As always, this product will improve with time, so find a few and enjoy them for years to come. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It's All About Extremes."

This poured a murky brown color with a beige head. Aroma was lots of caramel and sweet stickey malts with dark fruits and some toffe in their as well. Flavor was a little cardboard, light mint, alight herbs and lots of caramel malt. Held up pretty nice and no alcohol there at all.

Pouring at the grand tasting at RBSG in Philly. Pours a lightly hazy orange amber with a thin white head. Oxidized sweet caramel. Quite sweet. Oxidized plum and prune, malt, sweet toast. More oxidized caramel sweetness rounds it all out.

Bottle. Pours amber with a thin off white head. Sweet malty aroma, with some light oxidation, light yeast, and light herbal notes. The flavor has sweet toffee malts and light spicy yeast. Not bad.

Sweet toffee and raisin nose, lots of oxidation, some sherry. The taste is light to moderately sweet, tons of oxidation, light cardboard. Definitely disappointing after having the ’01.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2011 Bottle poured at the brewery for The "Even" Years vertical tasting. Mostly time obliterated and dusty. Some of that characteristic classic British barleywine aged tanginess that I’m guessing comes from using only Maris Otter. Mouth filles with booze galore and tangy dust. Still a slight hoppy edge in the background, but it’s mostly gone. Mucky.
