COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year’s version of our annual limited release introduced a new step in the process, barrel aging. After primary fermentation, this step, done in aged bourbon barrels, adds a unique element to the beer. To go along with this special process we used three types of malts, including peated malt, in the fermentation. This combination adds elements to the beer reminiscent of fine Scotch Whiskeys. East Kent Golding hops add to the Scottish influence and round out this exceptionally complex brew. Once again, the beer is finished with a bottle conditioning step and, like its predecessors, should continue to improve with age. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It’s All About Extremes!

Bottle from a long ago trade shared at paytoplays. Pours nice copper with no head. Nose is sweet. Taste is sweet and oxidized and a touch one dimensional. Unfortunately this hasn’t held up well.

Bottle. Deep transparent amber. Not much head. Aged barleywine nose..a bit of some brandy, a touch of sherry-like oxidation too. Sweet, caramilized sugar flavors...alcohol pretty hidden throughout...though there isn’t much complexity here, at least not anymore and the body seems pretty thin..don’t know how this was originally but even so, its certainly over the hill. Does that mean I shouldn’t rate it? No.

Bottle shared by cbk. Amber pour with a small foamy head. Sweet aroma and flavor with caramel, dark fruit, vanilla and citrus hops. A nice brew.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2011 Bottle poured at the brewery for The "Even" Years vertical tasting. Big boozy strong aroma, with quite a bit of paler fruits. Flavor tends dryish, but evaporating. A nip of wood and oak presence is noticeable, but most would be hard-pressed to say bourbon. Held up better than the ’08, that’s for sure. Decent, but a little rough around the edges and noticeably aged.

Courtesy of Pailhead. Bright copper, minimal white film for head, ring of bubbles. Aroma is full of bourbon, big smoke character, caramel and vanilla backend. Flavor is very well rounded. Nice caramel, vanilla combo, faint woody, smoky character. as it warms bourbon takes over more and more, slight turn-off. Big hot alcohol character as it warms as well. Palate/mouthfeel is a tad thin.

another odd one via cbk on 3/21/2010 that i’m happy i got to try. almost the same colored pour as the ’05.... orange-ish brown with no head. odd aroma and flavor (though not in a bad way)... choco, cocoa butter, vanilla, oxidized malt, raisins and honey. slick flat mouth feel. 6/3/6/3/14/3.2

My notes call for the same rating for this one as the 2005: Bottle shared by cbkschubert at Hellbilly’s Shootout in Sosco Tasting. Thanks Craig! Pours clear brown with minimal head. The nose is caramel and brown sugar. The taste is caramel, molasses and some oxidation added due to the age but still a tasty brew. Flat mouthfeel. Thanks for the opportunity to try this Craig!

UPDATED: APR 4, 2010 Bottle shared by cbkschubert @ Hellbilly’s...thanks again Craig!!! Amber colored brew with lots of caramel, dark fruit, toffee, and vanilla. Minimal carbonation and not terribly complex. This is a nice, drinkable barleywine without the overwhelming cloying sweetness indicative of some in the style.

Bottle @ Copenhaniacs tasting, Pt.1. Pours unclear amber with a small off white head and lacings. Sweet and vinous nose. Caramel, alcohol and toffee. Some syrup and dark fruit. A bit of bourbon and vanilla. Not owerpowering. Nice.

Bottle 750ml. blue glass.
Clear medium amber color with virtually none head. Aroma is light to moderate malty, caramel, toffee, moderate alcohol, bourbon - whiskey, light dried fruit. Flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, warm alcohol finish. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat, finish feel is light alcoholic. [20100314]
