COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This year’s version of our annual limited release introduced a new step in the process, barrel aging. After primary fermentation, this step, done in aged bourbon barrels, adds a unique element to the beer. To go along with this special process we used three types of malts, including peated malt, in the fermentation. This combination adds elements to the beer reminiscent of fine Scotch Whiskeys. East Kent Golding hops add to the Scottish influence and round out this exceptionally complex brew. Once again, the beer is finished with a bottle conditioning step and, like its predecessors, should continue to improve with age. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It’s All About Extremes!

Courtesy of Solan. Pours orange-ish copper with thin weak off white head. The aroma is mostly the barrel aged-ness and initially not much else. If I really concentrate I can just get some weak malt sweetness behind the wood and whiskey. The taste starts sweet and sticky then becomes woody and whiskey fortified. The barrel age aspect of the beer just takes too much of the flavor and hides almost all of the barleywine notes. I can just pick up faint dark fruit notes and faint caramel as just a murmur behind the whiskey. This wasn’t nearly as nice as the 2005.

Bottle Thanks to kramer17801 for this one. Pours a clear amber color with a small off-white head. Malty alcoholic caramel aroma with hints of dark fruit. Sweet malty dark fruit flavor with hints of alcohol and caramel. Sweet malty finish with a bitter aftertaste.

Pours firey red with no head. No signs of carbonation at all.
Maple, grass, and alcohol in the nose.
Sugary hoppy sweet, and hoppy as all hell.
Syrup and oily mouthfeel. Flat. Medium body. Sweet finish.
I enjoyed this, but I think carbonation would help it.

Bottle provided by ClarkVV and shared with Tom and Brian: Clean amber hue with absolutely no head and some oily legs, pours just like a Whiskey. The aroma has notes of caramel and toffee, fig, apple, apricot, toasted bread, herbs, and vanilla.

The taste starts with a lush syrupy simple sugar and an overall nutty character. Hints of ripened fruit and bread in the middle before heading off towards a old school barleywine finish of light spice and alcohol. The mouth feel is aggressive via the booze but lacked carbonation with may have been a good thing. Not in the same ballpark as the 2005 we had previous.

Pours out a hazy copper color with a small thin head. Aroma is wood and alcohol, slight sweet malts. Sweet malts up front with an alcohol/bourbon burn. Wood with some slight earthy notes on the finish.

Goldings hops, Bourbon aroma, a scotch ale sipper more than a barleywine. Alcohol is great and felt. Bee-aye-2500. Thanks Vaino

25 oz bottle. Pours a clear orangish copper with a small fizzy beige head that retains as a thin covering. Lots of fine visible carbonation. The nose is all malt with lots of brown sugar and brittle toffee. Very noticable alcohol vapors and a lighter amount of bourbon. No oxidation here yet. The alcohol and bourbon is a little too harsh still, and combined with the slightly husky and grainy malt, it just doesn’t work too well. Some light brown sugar and lots of alcohol on the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied without much sugary stickiness, which I liked, but the super hot finish is a turnoff. Nice soft fine carbonation. This was OK, but just way too harsh for already having a year on it. It must have been almost undrinkable fresh. Why release beer that needs 1+ years in the cellar to be halfway decent?
