Commercial Description:
This year’s version of our annual limited release introduced a new step in the process, barrel aging. After primary fermentation, this step, done in aged bourbon barrels, adds a unique element to the beer. To go along with this special process we used three types of malts, including peated malt, in the fermentation. This combination adds elements to the beer reminiscent of fine Scotch Whiskeys. East Kent Golding hops add to the Scottish influence and round out this exceptionally complex brew. Once again, the beer is finished with a bottle conditioning step and, like its predecessors, should continue to improve with age. It is extremely limited, extremely strong, and extremely original, because as we like to say around here: "It’s All About Extremes!

Pours syrupy, strongly woody and vanilla scents with alcohol and the unmistakably bittersweet scent of Scotch. Some dark chocolate, bourbon and a lot of butter. A bit of overkill, but still likable.

Thanks to Cryotek for this one. Pours a cloudy amber with no head. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel and bourbon whiskey. Flavor is moderately sweet, caramel, whiskey and light plum. Strange tinny aftertaste. Franky I’ve tasted homebrew barleywines from beginners that were more tasty than this one.

Bottle courtesy of cmr1517 at the Fort Wayne Winter Gathering. Very small head that quickly dissipated, no lacing, no carbonation noted, murky, and a dark orange hue. Nose was alcohol, malty, hoppy, bourbon, oak, some caramel, and sweet. Flavor was sweet, bourbon, vinuous, caramel, and malty.Mouthfeel was fairly smooth and slightly tingly. Medium-full in body. A sipping barley wine given the ABV, somewhat unbalanced as it seemed disjointed. Not interested in having this one again and there are better of this style IMO.

This corked and caged bottled brew from Chris at a rating party poured a head of frothy clear colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a semi-opaque dark orange brown colored body and a poor lacing. The aroma was malty mild hop and mild spice. The mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and strongly tingly at the finish with a vinous aftertaste. The thin flavor contained notes of strong sharp hops and bourbon. Not one that I would likely drink again.

bottle at Fort Wayne tasting - Pours murky orange with no head. It smells of oak, bourbon, and some alcohol. The flavor has oaked bourbon, caramel malt, and some light spice. It’s full bodied and the bourbon carries through to the finish. I’m going to have to disagree with some raters at our tasting. I thought it was very good.
