COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As is done every year, the recipe for this strong ale is quite different. The theme for this year’s brew was spice. This dark amber ale was built with the "raisiny" characteristics of Belgian Special B malt and filled in with crystal and pale malts. To balance this year’s 12% abv ale we used cinnamon, nutmeg, and blackstrap molasses as well as a variety of hops. The result is a sweet and spicy beer reminiscent of many of the treats coming from the local bakery.

Bottled. Amber coloured. Unclear. Small beige head. Aroma of fruits, caramel, medicine. Flavour of caramel, brown sugar and some occidation. Fruits notable. Medium bodied. Has a sweet and sugary end with a light alcoholbite.

Bottle 75 cl. Courtesy of RCL. Pours an almost clear nutty brown with a tiny off-white head. Sweet caramel and brown sugar in the nose, somewhat oxidized. Solid body, hardly any carbonation, sweet caramel, oxidized Sherry notes, again brown sugar. Hardly any hops. Pretty blah. 290311

Thanks to moniesocal for this bottle. Out of this blue bottle, the color of which is reminiscent of a Romulan Ale, came forth a murky brown pour with a small off white head. As advertised, the flavor is dominated by spices. Cinnamon and brown sugar flavors are at the forefront.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2011 Bottle poured at The "Even" Years Vertical Tasting at the brewery. Noses fig and very heavy oxidation. Intense sweetness, booze, and dust. Light caramel finish. The booze is surprisingly well-masked in the flavor, despite potent presence in the nose. No spice and no tar from the molasses. The sweetest and most oxidized of the night. Easily my least favorite.

Thin sloppy head from a vigorour pour. Rich and sweet aroma with lots of caramel, malts and some dark fruit (prunes). Appearance is a cloudy dark mahagony brown. Wow, super sweet and smooth flavor but rather lifeless. Very flat palate. Lots of caramel, brown sugar, raisins and some spices. Noticable alcohol presence but melds away quite nicely with the stong malt backbone. Finishes sweet and flat on the palate. Not a real good barleywine.
