COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As is done every year, the recipe for this strong ale is quite different. The theme for this year’s brew was spice. This dark amber ale was built with the "raisiny" characteristics of Belgian Special B malt and filled in with crystal and pale malts. To balance this year’s 12% abv ale we used cinnamon, nutmeg, and blackstrap molasses as well as a variety of hops. The result is a sweet and spicy beer reminiscent of many of the treats coming from the local bakery.

Courtesy of kiefdog. Pours clear mahogany with thin copper edges and really no head at all. The aroma is sherry sweet sludgy malts, some prunes and plums. The taste is smooth and sweet with chewy hops, molasses, some prunes, dates, plums and a slender layer of sherry soy goodness. This is smooth sweet and d-lish.

Bottle shared by argo0 on 1/10/10: Pours a dark copper amber with a small ring of off-white head. Aroma of sweet fruity caramel with some black cherries and toffee along with plenty of alcohol. Body starts with good rich caramel sweetness with a hint of fruity tartness and complexity before a sugary warming finish. Might get better with some age, but the tartness seems out of place.

Bottle. Brown pour with a thin off white head. Aroma of chocolate and brandy. Sweet taste of toffee, malt and chocolate with a heavy dose of sugary alcohol. Similar to the 2005 as one other reviewed noted, but much less complex and way too sweet.

Bottle courtesy BConley. After reading the reviews, we must have got a good bottle!. Blackish brown pour with a thin tan head. Tart orange peel, spicy malt and boozy aroma. More tart orange, orange hard candy and a mix of spices I cannot identify. Thick creamy body. Fruity finish. Some rough edges, but still pretty good.

Bottle at DC’s first tasting of 2010. This one is even sweeter than the 07, and alcohol is even more evident. Less malt character, and less complexity. Mixed sweet chocolate and slight sourness, but not well balanced.

75cl bottle. Small beige head atop cloudy copper-brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, some Brandy, light chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, sour, light chocolate. Minimal carbonation, medium-full body, some stickiness.

Bottle sampled at the DC Local Tasting. Pours a translucent, brown with a creamy white head. Aroma is fruity, apples, pears, honey, flowers. Flavor is a little off, sweet and fruity, but a little tart, honey, caramel, but nothing is working together. Finish is sticky and a heavy lasting sweetness. Something’s not right here.

Strange vegetal nose, lots of crystal/caramelt malt. Astringent taste, lots of sweetness again and almost no hops again. Apparently, they don’t get hops in Rhode Island.
