Occasionally our crew gets to live the fantasy that many of our fans romanticize about Ė sitting around, beer in hand, discussing what to brew next. In fact, this is how we came up with what will eventually become our next Annual Release. This year, inspired equally by the flavors of the beers we sampled as by the high alcohol contents of many of them, the crew here decided to pay homage to the Mayans. Using malted barley and flaked corn along with smoky chipotle, spicy habaneros, and cocoa nibs, this yearís beer is perhaps our most unique yet. So, whether the December 2012 end of the Mayan calendar means the end of the world or not, we wouldnít chance waiting to try this beer.

750mL Bottle and on draft at Beervana. The stinging back of the throat heat and stomach burning sensation were memorable from both festival and bottle. In the bottle, itís a bit more nuanced, with fruitiness from the chili in the nose and the flavor. I donít get much chipotle smokiness, just harsh and strong back of the throat heat. The cocoa is present and chocolate is the dominating flavor of the beer. After that, itís just burn. I donít know if the chocolate and chilis covered it up, but Iím impressed that the alcohol has been hidden and that that there are no glaring off-flavors. Otherwise, most of this bottle is going to be used to marinate some chicken thighs tonight.

Bottle... This beer rocks!Ö I was forced to open this before I wanted because itís corked, but not caged, and the cork was slowly working its way out. Pours hazy and dark brown with a mid-sized, fluffy, off-white head. The aroma is complex, with dark fruits, a blend of dark tropical-blossoms honeys and dark chocolate with lightly smoky and earthy nuances. Full-bodied with an oily mouthfeel and modest carbonation. The flavor offers Sweet chocolate, tropical honeys and dates with quite the spicy, chili pepper flavor and accompanying heat. Finishes spicy-hot and hearty with lingering chili pepper warmth. Not overbearing in my book, but I love spicy, Mexican food... and not the Tex-Mex, gringo stuff. Iím talking about holes-in-the-wall out in the desert southwest - the 505/ABQ. World class beer generously gifted by my good friend, growler!

Pours a deep mahogonny reddish brown with a thick off white lacing. Notes of chocolate and chipotle. A decent blend of sweet and spicy.

750mL bottle. Dark brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of habaneros, bitter chocolate and smoke. Heat from the peppers dominates most of the brew, with a lasting spicy finish. Not bad for sampling but I had trouble finishing even one glass.

On tap at Battleship. Pours a dark brown, near opaque color. Aroma is of sweeter malts, chile, oak, and some smoke. Flavor is of sweeter malts and smoke up front with a little chile burn in the back end. Leaves a smokey malt and chile finish. Hopefully I wonít have heartburn tonight.

Bottle purchased at Vickerís Liquors and shared with friends. Clear brown pour with a medium tan head. Aroma of chili pepper, caramel and roast. Malty and caramelly flavor with chocolate before a warming (no, hot) pepper finish.

Corked and waxed blue glass wine size bottle. Unique. Wax was difficult to remove. A - very smoky spicy aroma. The various peppers are prominent. APP - Darker than expected with a foamy khaki head. This beer just looks spicy! T - Peppers, malt, smoke (heavy) and Tabasco. Also some alcohol, but it is hard to notice over the intense spicy smokyness. P -Light carbonation wish there were more. Relatively thick. Overall ok,but very spicy and slow drinking. Going to try with BBQ Chicken.

Smells spicy, malty, and smoky. Pours dark with very small head. Tastes malty, definetly spicy. Doesnít have a huge alcohol taste, but is warming and spicy.Excellent beer.

Poured this one into a snifter. The thick tan head indicates a bit more carbonation on this one than other limited release beers from Newport Storm. The aroma is roasted with sweet malt and chocolate. No sign of the chipotle that the description indicates. The first sip matches the aroma with chocolate, roast, and a bit of smoke. Then it hits, the finish has the spicy chipotle that lingers subtly in the back of the throat. It was surprisingly easy to drink this beer considering the spicy character. Certainly the most interesting beer I’ve had, and a good one as well. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

750 ml corked and waxed cobalt blue bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a small lingering tan head. Aromas of cocoa, carmel, chipotles, habanero and light cinnamon. Palate was medium bodied and smoth with a dry warming finish. Flavors of cocoa, habanero, chipotles, cinnamon, light carmel and light earthiness with a smooth dry warming lingering cocoa finish. Great beer, would love more of this!

UPDATED: DEC 31, 2012 Wow, quite spicy, for a beer. The chipotle does come through on the nose and the tongue, which is amazing. The whole taste is a bit one-sided, but this beer seems to overcome any possible cloying one-trick pony sideshow that is implied by the description. Got tough to drink after about 5 oz.
