Pours a beautiful opaque chocolaty brown with a fine-bubbled head. The malty and strongly spicy aroma has a firm hint of chocolate. Flavor is rich with a nice balance of hops and malt, as well as an overtone of cloves and a hint of sweetness. Finish is lively and tingly.

Rich brown in color with a controlled brown head and some lacing. Great toffee, caramel, spice and bready aromas from the glass. Aggressive, spiced flavors and bright alcohol. One of the best winter seasonals.

A very good Belgian quasi-abbey ale. Indeed there is a lot of berry and other dark fruits present both in aroma and in flavor, along with maple, brown sugar, and some citrus way in the background. The carbonation was a little more than necessary. Overall it’s delicious.

Dark red-brown colored with little light brown head. Spices and licorice dominate this aroma with some berry sourness, mild alcohol also here. Medium to full bodied. Flavor has also strong licorice with sour berries, mild alcohol also here. Aftertaste lasts with dry yeast and licorice still. Slight disappointment.

DocHop (278) - Baltimore, Maryland, USA - DEC 9, 2008
Pours a dark rusty copper with a huge tan head. High carbonation and a great aroma of Belgian yeast, light cocoa and oak, along with some dark fruits and spices. Almost chocolaty sweetness at first that turns into an overripe fruit flavor ending with a slightly hoppy, dry finish. I think the flavor is a little dominated by the finish but overall it’s a very full bodied beer with a lot of good flavor. No taste of the 10% ABV.
