3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 iowaherkeye (2431) - San Diego, California, USA - SEP 6, 2006
Pours a cloudy red brown with a two finger creamy beige head. Aroma of graham crackers, dust, powdered sugar, plums, raisins, cherries, and earthy hops. The taste shows the 10% ABV better than the aroma, though still doesn’t taste as strong as it is. Flavor is the same as the aroma with the addition of the thyme and misc spices--which isn’t terribly strong, though does complement the other flavors quite well. Highly carbonated, medium bodied. This actually sort of reminds me of a dubbel--especially the St. Feuillien Brune--only more alcohol. Very good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Drew (2411) - Kent, Ohio, USA - DEC 29, 2002
Deep red/brown body with an everlasting light tan head. Cherries and dark fruits, lightly caramel. Citrus appeared mainly in the mostly dry finish along with other peppery spices. Was smoother and thicker on tap than in the bottle. Alcohol was not tasted in either version.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Allen (2394) - SWITZERLAND - JAN 3, 2008
Bottled 75cl. It pours a dark ruby beer with a dense, slightly beige head of a rather big size. The nose is of malt, alcohol, oranges, plums, raisins, rosemary, brown sugar and thyme. Lots of yeast showing up. The taste is very sweet malty, syrupy with lots of melon, toffee and yeast. Extremely smooth and nicely spicy with oranges and banana appearing which are accompanied by chocolate and molasses. Highly drinkable despite its strength. Caramel, alcohol, licorice and a lot of yeast in the finish. Definately quite a lot of thyme in there.

A great Belgian strong and the best I’ve had from this brewer. Aroma was just so so. Earth, spice and dark fruit. Pour was a nice dark amber/light brown with a good bit of sediment. Taste was very good. Strong berry and spice with a nice spicy aftertaste. I would never guess this was 10% Very nice carbonation. As the beer warms, more fruit flavor comes out. White grape and pear mostly. Very complex and delicious.

Draft: Volatile raisin aroma. Opaque brown, thin head. Raisin dominated flavor, with oak notes in the finish. Alcohol quite noticeable. Dogfish Head Raison d’etre is every bit as good, if not better, at a fraction of the price.
