3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
[November 21, 2008]
750 mL bottle best before the end of 2010 poured into a 2 pint brandy snifter. N’Ice Chouffe is dark brown, near black in dim lighting. A pretty large head forms, but it’s not obscene. The aroma is spicy and sweet with hints of fruits, cardamom, clove, and licorice. The mouthfeel is medium with just enough carbonation. It’s sweeter than the nose let on, but it’s not overly sugary. Flavors of plums, licorice, and light spices abound while the alcohol stays in the background. I almost think quad as I drink this. This is another tasteful ale from the Chouffe line up. It’s pretty big, well balanced, and complex. Good stuff.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Soft and almost orange copper pour with two fingers of sticky tan head. Nose is fine, has a weird doughy yeasty thing going on with some subtle fruity notes. Pear and apple. Flavor is a bit estery for me. Lots of dough and pear. Medium full body.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at House of Trembling Madness, York. Clear, dark red. Big tan head. Marzipan, the caramel you’d find in a Rolo (the missus was very specific about this). Red fruit. A lingering sweetness with light, alcohol warmth. Lovely beer.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Dark reddish brown with a caramel coloured head that sticks around for quite a while.
Not a strong aroma but there’s caramel, malts and some spices, the taste is similar but much better with a creamy smoothness and enough spicing to give it an edge but without becoming just that. Other than that it’s a belgian strong dark ale with brown sugar, dark fruits and a little pepper from the yeast, the 10% ABV is hardly noticeable until you’re done drinking.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pour is a dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma is a big candi sugar with some coriander and maybe some fig. Flavor is sugar covered dates and figs with some caramelized sugar and a minor spice. Finish has some fruitiness, sweetness with a bit of the alcohol showing up. Decent winter warmer with plenty of dark fruit and sweetness.

Colour: dark copper brown with a beige head
Nose: candy sugar, earthy leaves, herbs and spices (coriander?). Orange, apricot, plums. Cough syrup, licorice
Flavours: Raisins, herbs, malty sugar. Chocolate, brandy, nuts. Vanilla and oaky smokiness.
Finish: long, warming, spicy with a mellow alcoholic aftertaste
Verdict: very nice winter beer. As expected from Chouffe.
