1999 version sampled in March 2003, sort of a muddy orange-reddish-brown appearance, barely any head, a sour fruity aroma, moderately sweet with plenty of carbonation, a light textured, mildly fruity taste with some toasted malt, and just ever so slightly sour, yet crisp, citrusy aftertaste, well balanced, very thirst quenching and gratifying. Being from the Midwest, it reminded me of fuller textured, a tad more soured version of Three Floyd’s Alpha Kings Pale Ale.

Dark and subtle red color with a tan head. Dried fruits, bready and dark malt in the aroma. Medium to full body and a pleasant carbonation. A bit sweet without bein cloying. Dired fruits, some chocolate, bready and dark malty flavor. Decent stuff.

33cl bottle. Wow! Massive foamy head, I’ve read the comments on this beer are different each time, but I liked it!

Draft pour at bottleworks, listed as the 2011. Clear amber pour, little boozy aroma, slight bitter taste, interesting beer thought it would be better.

Draft 8 oz pour at Bottleworks. 2011 vintage. Pours a dark red color with a thin film head. Dark plum fruit aroma. Has a very fruity, flat wine like flavor. Almost a hint of chocolate. Overall it’s not bad, but a little flat, and less my type of flavor/beer. I would try this again.

Clear dark red brown. Airy iffwhite head disappears quickly. Aroma has malt, caramel, dried fruit and whiffs of alcohol. Perhaps coffee in the long nose. Flavour is similar with solid, warming alcohol and a little spice later on.

330 ml stubby brown bottle served after some warming in a Belgian snifter. Best before 6/2016. Poured, with some sediment, into a Belgian snifter. Hazy dark brown body is topped by a small semi-durable head. Splotchy lacing. Aroma: rich, lightly sweet and very complex with a touch of alcohol. Flavor: Rich, complex and slightly bitter. Pronounced suggestions of dark fruits including dried plums. Also a bit nutty, spicy and bready. O: An Xmas ale that is neither sweet nor very spicy, but does have high, partly hidden, ABV.

Bottle. Pours deep brown with light brown head - good retention and lacing. Aroma is mild with some citrus peel, cherries and candi sugar. Flavor is mild but good - deeply caramelized malts dominate, some notes of cherry and plum - with quite a bit of alcohol bite on the finish and some lingering hop bitterness and alcohol astringency. I’m drinking this out of season, but I imagine that this would be a very nice holiday warmer - as a Belgian dark ale it is big and has a gravity to be reckoned with, something like a barleywine really.
