UPDATED: JAN 14, 2005 This winterbrew by Chouffe did not fill me with enjoyment. The traditional chouffe taste was not well balanced and the alcohol content is just too present. A bit of a disappointment after all those great chouffe brews :-(

Decent brown ale. Good head with very faint aroma. Flavor is lightly malty but not to the intensity I would expect for a Belgian Winter Ale.

Quite bitter, low carbonation. The alcohol is pretty well hidden. A nice winter warmer.

1999 consumed in 2003. Brown and cloudy with a real fizzy carbonated head. The yeast from the bottom of the bottle fizzed alone at the sides of each glassful. Dark fruits in this one as opposed to the lighter fruit in the Soliel. Nearly identical finish. maybe more spicy and complex. Surely hides the 10+% very well.

Brodie (540) - Blowing Rock, North Carolina, USA - DEC 24, 2003
2002 edition: Spices come out very nicely in the aroma - orange peel and thyme (I just happen to be using thyme for my Christmas roast, otherwise I might not have been able to pick it out). There is also a slight hop aroma, actually slightly skunked (green bottle), but this dissipated quickly. Bottle gushed, poured a nice brown color, pretty good head retention. Flavor is sweet at first, malty with a good dose of spices, and finished with a mild hop bitterness. Smooth medium body, high carbonation at first but calmed down pretty quickly. Not sure I like the orange peel-thyme combination, but they were definitely successful in hilighting these flavors in the beer. Overall the beer is nicely balanced and a pretty good Christmas Belgian.

Very dark brown, but with clear red shine; very thick, beige head, quite stable. Rich, warm malty nose, at the same time piney - not hoppy. Very sweet taste but with overtones of burnt malt and burnt caramel. Liquorice, herbal notes (aroma's like aucuba leaves, or maybe thyme). Velvety, creamlike mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden, but the warming, heavy feeling says it all. This is far from bad. Achouffe seldom is. But imagine this being made in DFH... explosion of hops, chocolate and alcohol - or St. Bernardus - explosion of vinous, fruity, and chocolate notes. Achouffe is just too polished for that. Sorry. I am.

(Bottle) Pale brown, orange shine, hazy colour, large and long lasting yellowish head, with a lot of yeast is floating in the bottle. Sweet malty aroma, caramel, fruity (figs, candied fruit), light licorice. Taste is sweet, malty and fruity, licorice aftertaste. Smooth, thick texture, medium to full body, alcohol well hidden.

2004: At first I didn’t like the Belgian yeastiness and fizzy carbonation, but as it has warmed and settled down a bit, I really enjoying it. It has a nice bronze/mahogony color with a rich/foamy brown/white head on it that lends its services throughout the whole experience. Aroma is mainly Belgian yeastiness with a little toffee and spice. Taste is bready and yeasty. the malt comes through nicely and has a good toffee flavor. The aftertaste is slightly bitter which a kind of don’t like in this. It’s very fizzy and medium to thin bodied. Good, but it’s just not my style.

UPDATED: JAN 11, 2005 1996 bottle....thanx to eyedrinkale..Pours a cloudy rown hue with no head. Aromas of lemon, yeast, and tea. Flavors of lemonade, teas and a hint of yeast.

Cola coloured body with some tawny tinges. Light tan, large and mainly lasting head that left great lacing. Cinnamon and dull spice on the nose. Smooth taste that grew in richness as the beer warmed, alcohol was well hidden until I tried to drive home, roasted/burnt characters as well caramel and malt. Lively carbonation and a fairly long finish.
