Closeout bottle (2010) at Red Apple $6. Brown sugar, baked apples, dark plums, soft carbonation. It’s everything you’d expect in a Belgian Strong Ale.

Classic Belgian Christmas ale - and four days before Christmas, the time is right to put this under scrutiny, especially since I haven’t tasted it yet since Achouffe was taken over by Moortgat. Thin but ’natural’ and dense, pale greyish head over a deep wine-red beer, almost clear at first but hazy with deposit. Aroma of cookie dough, coffee grounds, toasted bread, dried plums, chocolate liqueur, baked banana, tea, brandy, coffee grounds, walnuts, butterscotch, quite a lot of iron almost becoming obnoxious, candi sugar, cloves, coriander seed. Taste begins with a reserved sweetness, raisins, dried banana, some candi sugar but not exaggeratedly so, soft and mellow mouthfeel with lowish carbonation as is fit for this style, spicy accents with coriander manifesting itself in a quite dominant way, slick and soft nutty and caramelly malt sweetness, a bit resinous, leading to a finish of yeasty spiciness, leafy hop bitterishness, deep malt sweetness with a slightly roasted touch and heart-warming, brandy-like alcohol which manages to stay gentle; the drying coriander effect also remains. In all, perhaps a bit less sweet and spicy than I remember, but still a very decent and typical Scotch-based Belgian Christmas beer. The iron in the nose did bother me a bit and the coriander could have been a bit less dominant, but this is a good starting point to get to know this very particular style.

75cl bottle from Erzbierschof. This is indeed a very tasty and easily drinkable beer. The typical features that an outstanding Belgian strong ale would have are only hinted at, but this is easily made up by the fact that it is very smooth and non-aggressive. Definitely a beer I enjoyed.

Kabooom, 10% winter beer, like the other chouffe, you drink as many as you can, with good company and the little dwarf smiles at you.Taste very good and alchool is not directly felt in the mouth, but it is strong!

On tap at Ashley’s Westland. Dark brown poor with an off-white head. Butterscotch, toffee, malty aroma. Flavor dominated by butterscotch, toffee, lightly toasted malt. Something’s off here. Didn’t work too well.

A nice dark amber color with a big fluffy head. Aroma is plums and brown sugar. Taste is sweet and boozy, but also containing more of the dark fruits and molasses. Still rather light-bodied for the ABV. In short, it’s like a lighter (and much less-developed and less complex) version of Bernardus Abt 12 with the same ABV. Nice Christmas brew.

Very dominant body without the oily taste film in the mouth. It is not as creamy and heavy as expected. Spicy but nothing very special.
