3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
750 mL bottle. Black. Richly colored cafe au lait head of foam that doesn’t last too long and leaves no lacing. Delicate caramel toffee, medium roast coffee. Layers of fruit, sour cherry, grape, prune. Oak and vanilla. Not a lot of funk but some definite brett presence. Seemingly sweet, rounds out nicely with balancing roasty bitterness, tannic oak and subtle tartness. Low to moderate carbonation, with a full body. Palate coating and consuming. Sticky and mouth coating.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Bar Hop, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out shitloads of red wine and brett - they overtake the impie stout notes completely. Flavour is rather exquisite, bringing out a unique mix of red wine, brett and roasted malt. Huge, potent flavours, without being brutal at all. A slow sipper, but a treat.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
On tap at Bar Hop (Toronto). Black with a brown head. Tannin, roasted malt, chocolate, boozy and dry sugar, slightly tangy with hints of anise and some coffee grinds. Full body and mild+ carbonation, odd tanginess, some grape musk, boozy on finish with some tanginess. Interesting but seemed off balance to me.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at the Bent Elbow. Spice and wine aroma. Taste: crazy! Mix of impy stout and red wine. Spice in there too. Crazy. Body also feels like a mix of impy stout and red wine. Good, with bonus points for creativity.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pretty sure this is my second try, I lost the original rate - but it was better this time, not as simplistic or sweet. Great, smooth French-style oak showing through, with light round tannins and even some deep tartrate-like (wine crystals) red wine fruit. Maybe not a world-beater stout under this, but a suitable one and overall a remarkable treatment.

As Winey Bastard: A deep dark stout with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, a sweet licorice chocolate malt with light wine notes and alcohol warmth. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate with vinous notes, white grapes, licorice, herbal notes, coffee grinds, alcohol warmth. On tap at Arrow and Loon, Jan 2 2013.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Draught at Volo. Dec. 7. Pours dark brown, almost black, with a small diminishing creamy light-brown head. Aroma is sweet and quite fruity, with red wine, wood, licorice and alcohol. Flavour: Whoa, boozy and lots of red wine, along with sweet malt, wood and a long finish. Medium bodied. This is good but it’s really wine-ey and a bit boozy, I prefer the original.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
(draught at Bryden’s, 12-21-12) Pours black with a thin tan head that faded quickly without lace. Aroma is very wine-forward, like a tart red (expected from the pinot...). Oaky tannin and vanilla comes in with warmth along with a very light hint of coffee roast. Flavour is again winey at first, with a bit of acidity though not quite sour. Vanilla from the oak comes in mid-palate along with a bit of roast, and then finishes with some tannin and roast coffee that lingers in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is very thin for an imperial stout, but the carbonation very soft. Booze fairly well-hidden until warm. Very much a red wine-beer hybrid, tasted more like a blend than a BA. Quite interesting for those who love both, though a bit more body would have been ideal.
