3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at Brothers Beer Bistro (Ottawa, ON). Opaque black body with a thin beige foamy head. Robust malty/hoppy aroma with vineous and oaky hints. Its strong taste carries vineous, plummy, licorice, and woody notes. Ends with a long, warming bittersweet finish. Solid.

3.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
This looked interesting in the store and it had decent ratings here and on BA so I figured I’d give it a try.
First off, the wax is a PITA to get off, until you realize you can just pop the cap by shoving your bottle opener through it.
Smells of red wine, grape juice, and cider vinegar. There’s some roast, chocolate, and coffee coming through. Initially, the red wine/vinegar smell is overpowering and almost offensive, but you get numb to it pretty quickly.
Pours an opaque black with about 2 fingers of coarse, brown head. Head fades quickly and leaves a light scattering of bubbles on top.
The taste is not what you expect a stout to be. I would imagine this is what licking the inside of an old wine barrel tastes like. It’s sour. So sour. Like, kriek sour. We’re not talking a nice red wine flavor or anything here -- just sour. Do you like cider vinegar and grape juice mixed 1/2 and 1/2? Because this is how you get cider vinegar and grape juice mixed at 1/2 and 1/2. I’m sure it’s a stout under there somewhere, but honestly, it’s impossible to find it under the overpowering taste of cheap red wine left in the fridge for a month with a piece of cling wrap over the top.
After the first few sips, though, you will develop stockholm syndrome with your wine barrel captor and finally be able to taste a slight chocolate and coffee-like... something... under there. The wine flavor never completely goes away and I can’t help but think I’d rather have just drank alternating glasses of a nice pinot noir and a nice russian imperial stout instead.
The alcohol burns and the vinegar makes you pucker. It finishes with a cloying stickiness and that weird smell you get from certain stouts that conjures images of someone distilling the essence of dirty socks and buttcrack sweat into balsamic vinegar and making the victim swish. After a while there’s a nice stouty aftertaste which I think redeems it a bit.
Overall, I think this is still an above average beer, but the brewer needs to remember to mix things in moderation. For what it’s worth, I drank the whole 650mL bottle, but dealing with the sourness was rough for about the first half of the bottle. I’m not sure if I got used to the flavor, got drunk, or suffer from stockholm syndrome, but the second half went down easier. If you get a chance to sample it, you should, but I would not recommend a whole bottle to anyone unless they were really into sour beers or cheap red wine.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, heavy purple wax seal, shared with TylerDurden. Very dark brown, lively light brown head. Quite a funky nose, underlying rich dark malts. Deep chocolate malty body, lively funky character, vinous and lightly spicy. Loved this, much better than the base beer alone.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
750ml capped bottle pours black in color with a 2 finger light beige head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is red wine grapes. Taste is a fruity and malty sweetness with some dry notes and a mild hoppy bitterness. A little light in body for the style with carbonation being appropriate to the style. Not one of the better imperial stouts out there, a little too winey for my tastes.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle bought at the Nickelbrook brewery in Burlington. Outstanding aroma of red wine, dark chocolate, roasted malt, sour cherries. Pitch black color, no flash light penetration. Beige creamy head that vanished but keeps a gentle layer. The bottle label says 9.5% abv but the alcohol is smartly hidden. The initial sweet fruit taste like fruit juice becomes in no time a taste of roasted malt, dark chocolate, espresso but the red grapes and red wine flavor are still present and utterly outstanding. This delicacy finishes with a mild red wine flavor and warming mild alcohol plus bitter roasted malt. Overall a fantastic mind blowing brew!
