Pretty sure this is my second try, I lost the original rate - but it was better this time, not as simplistic or sweet. Great, smooth French-style oak showing through, with light round tannins and even some deep tartrate-like (wine crystals) red wine fruit. Maybe not a world-beater stout under this, but a suitable one and overall a remarkable treatment.

UPDATED: APR 16, 2014 2014-03-21. Black body with a modest tan head that fades. 3+ Aroma of fruity vinous red wine. Flavour is similarly quite fruity and vinous, prominent red wine character, sweetish core leads to a tangier vinous finish. Average plus bodied palate, soft carbonation. Nice stuff. 7/4/8/3/16 Bottle shared by GregClow

Overheard: "Oh Island Joe. He loves the ping pong." I have no idea why that warranted writing down.

2012-11-29. Black body with a modest tan head and lace. 3+ Good amount of red wine character in both the aroma and flavour. Mild roast and dark malt are present and supportive but the wine despite not being overly aggressive is the dominant character in both. Smooth medium body, modest carbonation. Really nice, I quite enjoyed this. Caught me at the right moment I think. 8/4/8/4/16 On tap at Amsterdam Movember Event

[4976-20121129] Tap. Roasted wine barrel charred malt aroma. Black body with a long-lasting creamy brown head. Roasted red wine wood and charred malt continues in the flavour. Full body. Tasty, very filling. (8/4/8/4/16) 4.0

Tap at Volo. Deep black pour and a fast-fading head. The aroma is quite vineous with a little bit of soft tartness on the nose along with some distinct oak notes. Warming seems to bring out more of the soft oakiness and brings up some sweetness tha wasn’t there initially. The beer has a lovely balance - sort of a lean and bright version of the regular stout.

(draught at Bryden’s, 12-21-12) Pours black with a thin tan head that faded quickly without lace. Aroma is very wine-forward, like a tart red (expected from the pinot...). Oaky tannin and vanilla comes in with warmth along with a very light hint of coffee roast. Flavour is again winey at first, with a bit of acidity though not quite sour. Vanilla from the oak comes in mid-palate along with a bit of roast, and then finishes with some tannin and roast coffee that lingers in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is very thin for an imperial stout, but the carbonation very soft. Booze fairly well-hidden until warm. Very much a red wine-beer hybrid, tasted more like a blend than a BA. Quite interesting for those who love both, though a bit more body would have been ideal.

750 mL bottle. Black. Richly colored cafe au lait head of foam that doesn’t last too long and leaves no lacing. Delicate caramel toffee, medium roast coffee. Layers of fruit, sour cherry, grape, prune. Oak and vanilla. Not a lot of funk but some definite brett presence. Seemingly sweet, rounds out nicely with balancing roasty bitterness, tannic oak and subtle tartness. Low to moderate carbonation, with a full body. Palate coating and consuming. Sticky and mouth coating.

As Winey Bastard: A deep dark stout with a thin dark brown head. In aroma, a sweet licorice chocolate malt with light wine notes and alcohol warmth. In mouth, a nice sweet chocolate with vinous notes, white grapes, licorice, herbal notes, coffee grinds, alcohol warmth. On tap at Arrow and Loon, Jan 2 2013.

On tap at Bar Hop, pours black with a small brown head. Aroma brings out shitloads of red wine and brett - they overtake the impie stout notes completely. Flavour is rather exquisite, bringing out a unique mix of red wine, brett and roasted malt. Huge, potent flavours, without being brutal at all. A slow sipper, but a treat.

On draught at Bar Hop. Near opaque brown-black. Small frothy brown head. Aroma - oak tannins, red wine sourness, light coffee/chocolate and alcohol. Taste follows, more tannins, a hint of wine vinegar, slightly boozier, some nougat and molasses sweetness - nice. Light, almost watery - light acidity, weak carbonation, quite woody. Lovely.
