2014. 750ml bottle. Clear dark copper-reddish body, medium mocha dens head with good retention. Aroma of spices and herbs, oak barrel, gingerbread, sorrel, wine. Taste of bitter herbs, coriander, bourbon hints, malts, dried berries. Very nice.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle - 750ml (Vintage 2014 - 7.5% abv). Pours a cloudy, dark brown body with a thin off-ehite frothy head. Strong, rich malty/hoppy aroma with lovely Bourbon, dry fruits, and oaky hints. Alcohol is not too agressive. Its sharp malty/hoppy taste carries plummy, oaky, bourbon, and herbal notes. Ends with a long, robust, warming bittersweet finish. Interesting.

UPDATED: DEC 27, 2014 This is the 2013 vintage, and beyond whatever bourbon barrel aging they did, I aged this one a year in my cellar before opening it tonight near the end of 2014. What an assault on the senses this one is. I’m getting gingerbread, cinnamon, grapes, white wine and other things I won’t attempt to identify, on both the nose and palate. Everything tumbles into each other, vying to be the dominant one, with none succeeding, given there is so much going on.
I don’t like it quite as much as its sister brew, Nickel Brook’s bourbon Barrel Aged Kentucky Bastard, but it is still a very complex, superior brew to most things out there in the beer market.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
2013 vintage. 750 mL bottle. Hazy reddish brown with a thick off white head. Very nice nose, a bouquet of spices, toasty malts, orange and subtle barrel. Moderate sweetness balanced with generous hopping and some boozy barrel notes. Creamy palate with moderate plus body and average carbonation. Tasty, well integrated and (luckily, based off other reviews) improved by age.

Had it both in bottle and on tap. Great subtle notes of bret but the spice makes this a great beer to pair with food. Very versatile.

The 2013 edition. Ugh...just wonderful really. I am not sure about all the low ratings for this, I loved it. It’s very wintry and Christmasy for me and since I am a sap for the those two things, instant satisfaction. Right out of the gate it’s a looker; a pretty burnt cranberry ruby-brown body with a cream coloured velvet to froth greet you. Warming smells of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, apple pie, cranberries, dark fruitcake, red wine, wood, bourbon and a mild a basementy funk meld wonderfully to comprise a smooth and complex smell and taste. Sweet but not cloying with enough bitterness to keep it out of dessert territory and still remaining very drinkable. Silky smooth thick mouthfeel with mid-low carbonation rounds out this joyous holiday warmer.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
750 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass. 2013 vintage.
App.: Clear copper with a decent tan head.
Aroma: Spicy, almost smells infected, bourbon barrel character comes through, quite a bit, boozy, peppery, light Belgian yeast character, seems a bit harsh.
Palate: Medium+ body, somewhat relaxed effervescence.
Flav.: Lots of booze and barrel, some fruitiness and quite spicy, fairly rich malts, peppery, some Belgian character – more phenol than ester for sure; dry with gentle bitterness and a long, boozy, spicy, woody finish.
Not something I could drink much of. A shame to have opened a big bottle...

Great aroma and flavour from the bourbon barrel aging. Flavours of vanilla and caramel are combined with earthy flavours of oak barrels.

Murky amber pour with reddish tinge and a medium sized off white head. Aroma of malts, caramel, dried fruits, nutmeg and bourbon. Taste of malts, caramel, raisins, orange peel, nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, slightly woody and bourbon. Full bodied, perfect carbonation, just the right amount of bourbon notes complimenting the beer. Very nice beer actually.
