3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
August 27, 2011 - on draught at The 2011 Golden Tap Awards @ BeerBistro. Oh, Iím sure this will be good. Opaque and dark, small head. Aroma is surprisingly strong, oily deep roast, some butter, a bit of cola syrup, some actual dry herbal bitterness - not much alcohol - not bad, go on ....? Taste is dry, oily, not sweet, decent balance, a weird bit of burnt buttered popcorn, but it doesnít detract too much. Slick, stick mouthfeel, fairly thick, weakly carbonated, slight syrupy harshness in the finish (thatís the only place I get maple) - ehh, not bad, not great.

2.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
Medium brown pour, light beige head. Aromas of burnt sugar and lightly roasted malts. Flavor is more of the same with a hint of wet paper, and nuts. Finish is very sweet, and astringent. This is a mess.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Well I just wrote my review for Nickel Brookís Green Apple Pilsner so itís nice to arrive at my favourite beer by this brewery. Hereís what I think: This is not a complex beer whatsoever. Itís porter and maple syrup and thatís all you taste, really. But the flavours magically infuse and make a slight stickiness that just works. Itís probably the best uncomplex beer Iíve ever had. Beautiful appearance, too. It would be nice to see this style become popular in Canada.

6.0% ABV (as written on menu)
I tried this beer on tap on March 15, 2012 at "Cíest What" in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The beer poured a very dark brown, with black hints and a creamy tan cap. The aroma is dark malt, floral hops, and caramel. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with mild carbonation. The flavour is maply sweet, with hints of roasted malt and coffee. Dangerously drinkable.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From the bottle, pours dark brown little to no head retention. Aroma, very understated, bread/toast, maple, roasted malt. Taste, oily, buttery(but NOT diacetyl-ly). A little too sweet for my liking from a porter.

Bottle, not too sweet, Not a huge amount of maple in there for me. It was a nice bodied beer with a good smooth finish. Overall enjoyable

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Pours dark and clear with a strong head. Aroma is strong with malt and the added maple is very clear. Taste is very sweet.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: APR 7, 2013 Dark brown pour, active tan head. Aroma of maple syrup, molasses, dark chocolate, espresso. Lots of character. Sweet and chewy. Flavour as advertised by the aroma. Good stuff.

Time for a re-rate, one year later. Odd tartness, maple syrup barely present. Hmmmm.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours dark brown - little head. Without maple I think this is a really watery, insipid porter. The maple gives it much needed oomph and character, especially on the finish, which is lingering woodsy, vegetal sweetness. By the end of a point though the maple starts to build up and gets cloying.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle from brewery. Pours clear dark brown (like Pepsi/Coke). Aroma is fine maple/porter aroma. Taste has a bit of roastiness and sweetness to it, but also a strange cidery tartness and some metallic notes. Wonít bother having this again.
