COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Nickel Brook took some of the best Pinot Noir barrels from the Niagara wine region and tossed their Bolshevik Bastard Imperial Stout in it? I mean, what have they done to the soft oak and subtle, earthy fruit notes from the barrel? Their Imperial Stout has WAY too much chocolate, coffee and dark fruit flavours for the delicate notes imparted by the barrel-aging process. I don’t know what they think they’re doing. So what if it’s delicious? Drink it today, or cellar it to enjoy later as it matures. A votre santé!

750 ml bottle. Pours black with a resilient beige head. Aroma is chocolate, red wine, funk and wood. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, red wine, brettish and funky. Finish is wood, red wine, black grapes, blackberries and dark cherries. Very fruity lingering flavors, along with woody notes. Full body, soft and velvety mouthfeel, weak to average carbonation.

pours unclear very dark brown with a very nice beige cap, reviving and leaving lacing. dark roastiness, smooth milk chocolate, red grapes, blackberries - just a touch of acidity; some sweetness - molasses. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily; semi-sweet spicy-woody finish. lots of vinous character - welcoming light acidity. good stuff! wow, their base beer has improved a lot. pinot noir at its best as well.

UPDATED: DEC 6, 2015 Pours a really dark brown with a small beige head that leaves spotty lacing. Nose is of red wine, dill (from the pinot?), chocolate, booze. Taste is vinous and not really sweet, moderately bitter. Grapes, chocolate. Drying alcohol. Body is medium-full, carbonation moderate and mouthfeel is of course vinous. Nice pinot features, almost exactly like I imagined. A nice one, one of the better red wine BA imperial stouts I’ve had for sure.

750 ml bottle (2014) from LCBO. Pours a deep inky near black colour with nice mocha-coloured head with decent retention. Aroma is quite big on red wine character with tart cherries, berries, plum, as well as hints of roast and chocolate. Flavour is also big on vinous notes with lots of tart cherry, red currant, plum and more subtle roastiness, dark chocolate as well as a little oakiness. Fine carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Nice one.

One finger creamy mocha head, fades slowly to thin blanket. Black colour, very dark even at the edges. Brett, oak, light roast, milk chocolate. Matching flavours, but more rich chocolate in the front, coffee, red wine. Beautifully creamy mouthfeel. Chocolaty finish, with complimentary acidity. Really enjoying this beer, well done!

750 ml bottle from LCBO, served at cellar temperature in a tulip glass.

App.: Deep brown-black with a loose mocha head. Aroma: Intense red wine, has an acidic edge that reminds me of some Flanders Red Ales, sharp, chocolate and coffee in the background, kinda peppery, somewhat boozy, black strap molasses. Palate: Medium-full body, kinda sloppy but fairly present carbonation, smooth. Flav.: Lots of red wine character accentuated with lovely dark-roasted malt/Impy stout notes, a little coffee and chocolate, still has that bright, acidic Flanders character (red wine vinegar), a bit boozy; dry with very light tartness, moderate bitterness, powdery feel and a red wine and dark-roasted malt finish with apparent alcohol.

This is a Big Bastard for sure. I prefer the Kentucky and straight versions more.

2013 bottle shared by Karol, many thanks! Very dark colour, quite stable head, gushed a little bit but no big deal. Aroma really really fruity, fresh, berries, cherry, sour cherry. Almost like a wine, only more intense and better. Taste betrays slight brett, light to moderate. That probably created the gush. However the higher carbonation helps cover the alcohol well and also has a smooth quality. Lots of rich maltiness as well, roasted, caramel, chocolate. Lots of fruits, berries, currant, vinous. Incredibly complex. Balanced even in basic tastes - sweetness, bitterness, light tartness. Dangerously easily drinkable. Right at the top. On par with my 4.7s, but considering there is still a 0.1 space to go before 5, this gets a well deserved 4.8. Man this is good. Not sure if the brett was an original component at the time of bottling, but it did not get out of hand here. Probably a good thing it got drunk now.

0,75 l pullo jaettu maistelussa (thanks Cuso!) @ 100 piv. Samea tummanruskea. Tuoksussa täyteläistä mallasta, tummaa marjaa ja hedelmää, maltaalla kyllästettyä portviiniä! Maussa selvästi paahteista ja kahvista mallasta, kirsikkaa, säilöttyä luumua. Tämän jälkeen mahtava punaviinin maku upgradettuna! Kyllä!
