COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
White Stout with fresh Ethiopia Harrar coffee beans from J.P. Licks added right before bottling

When the warm weather hits, we bring out the Snow. Confusing? Indeed, and so is this beer. With zero chocolate malts in the mash, Snow looks like a pilsner. With heaps of wheat and oatmeal, it sips like a creamy stout. With fresh coffee beans added, it smells like a cup of espresso. And with a fairly low ABV, it drinks like a session beer. You’ll be totally perplexed by this beer, and you’ll like it. Look for Snow to hit Boston in late April/early May 2013 Note: With no dark malts, this beer is definately not a stout. It is a mix of styles and ingredients. It does not seem to fit any known styles.

Corked and caged bottle from Julios. Pours out a hazy golden color with little to no head. Much cloudier at the bottom. Aroma of coffee and wheat. Flavor of coffee and wheat, but generally quite bland. Very low hopping and alcohol. Lingering sour coffee notes. This beer could benefit from a better yeast or hop profile. If it had Belgian yeast, I might call this a saison. It’s so hard to pin this into one category. Except for the coffee, it’s far from a stout IMO.

750 ml bottle with a bottling date of 5/7/2013. Batch 1. I used an English pint glass that shows me a clear gold color with lasting head retention. Aroma has a light jalapeno pepper, wheat and flaked oats. Not the most tempting aroma I ever smelled.

Flavor of bitter coffee beans, yeast and pale grain. And not all out pepper but I get a light vegetable note. Oatmeal chewy texture in a medium body. Yeah…. Really odd stuff here gentlemen. I think I like my “stouts” with roasted chocolate malt and rich roasted barley. I enjoy coffee but the low ABV really required a fresh sample. My fault I forgot about this bottle, not sure how much better this would have been had I had it earlier.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy yellow gold body with a one finger fizzy white head that had nice retention. The nose is mostly a mix of malt varieties, wheat, oatmeal, and bready pale malt. The coffee is pretty intense for what you’d expect from a beer of such light color. The flavor is rather unusual, primarily wheat and bready malt under a fairly strong layer of coffee. Lingering light roast coffee on the finish. Lighter bodied with lots of fizzy prickly carbonation. Pretty easy drinking, but the coffee gains intensity the more you have of this and it does get a bit tiring.

Light easy drinker, highly drinkable at 3.4% and yet brings more flavor to the table than I expected. A beer worth trying for sure.

Bottle shared courtesy of Jay at Paul’s July 2013 tasting. Pours a milky white body with nice haze and white lacing. Aroma is peppery, spices and tangy wheat. Mouthfeel is medium to light with notes of peppery wheat, tangy funk, spice and vegetable flavors. Ok, but very strange overall.
