Aroma of molasses, wood, smoke, burnt malts, a little bit of soy, and light liccorice. Taste is bitter cooking chocolate, and burnt malts with very subdued coffee. Syrupy mouthfeel with somewhat lively buubles. A bit chalkey at the end. Brigadier (1217), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Jul 9, 2008 11.2 oz bottle
I have been cellaring this for a few months. Deciding now was as good a time as any to try one of my two bottles I cracked it open. What I discovered was a solid imperial stout. It may not be spectacular or as complex as the big boys but I can’t wait to see what a few years does to the other bottle.
Aroma / Appearance - A short lived ashen head decorated a deep black body that swirled gracefully around my snifter. Without being oily a nice layer of lacing gave it some presence. Peanut butter, coffee and smoke are the strongest players in the aroma. Cherry, chocolate and dark malts assist in forming a rich dense but not cloying experience.
Flavor / Palate - The impression of strong black coffee shocked my tongue into paying closer attention. Warm smoke, raspberries and dried expresso beans were next. The third wave was chocolate and more coffee. Lingering after the coffee the chocolate finish gave a nice closure to the taste. While not my favorite imperial stout this was certainly well made and deserving of praise. Give it a shot if you can track it down. Mogwai (217), Askeby, Denmark Jul 8, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown colour with lasting brown head. Flavor is roasted, coffee, burnt caramel, but still sweet. Flavor is, again, roasted with coffee, but with chocolate and wood tones as well. Very good, and with a relatively low ABV of 7%, not that strong. Dorwart (1807), Robbinsville, New Jersey, USA Jul 7, 2008 Thin orangish brown head which dissipates quickly. Rich toffee and molasses aroma with some burnt toast and a some raisins. Color is a very dark brown with a hint of red around the edges. Medium bodied with lots of roasted malts, some bitter chocolate and lots of hops bitterness. The bitterness lingers quite a while at the finish with some light coffee and dry cocoa. A surprisingly bitter stout and a pretty good one. Thanks to etowneraser for this one. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA Jul 6, 2008 Pours with a black body topped by a thin head with some lacing. It’s slightly sweet and malty with a touch of roasty notes and a note of chocolate. Full bodied and smooth. Skyview (4007), Papoose Jct., Minnesota, USA Jul 6, 2008 From a 500ml bottle shared by badgerben, pours an opaque dark brown brew with a thin tan head that quickly dissipates to a thin film. Aroma of toasted dark malt, dark chocolate, a touch of licorice and some coffee. Taste is full bodied, very little carbonation with flavors of toasted dark malt, more chocolate flavor than coffee with some dark pitted fruits. Finish remains a thick texture with a slow disappearing toasted malt aftertaste. A solid impy throughout. badgerben (3586), Blaine, Minnesota, USA Jul 5, 2008 Black color with a medium head. Very strong coffee, oak, toasted malt and chocolate aroma. A bunch of strong malt taste. Some mint or spearmint as well. Bitter roasted malt. Very solid.
