yngwie (4880), Kristiansand, Norway Jun 5, 2008 Updated: Feb 27, 2009Bottle, 2003 vintage. A dark, dark brown beer with a ruby tint. Small, dense, beige head. The aroma has a pleasant touch of oxidation, coffee and chocolate. Quite lovely. Mocha, chocolate, dark coffee, some meaty notes and a touch of oxidation in the mouth. Dry and full-bodied. A delicious result from 5 years of cellaring. Rating: 7-4-8-4-15-3.8. (081229)
Bottle. It pours a lovely black body topped by a dense beige to tan head. Nice lacings too. The beer is more flavorful than I remember, and the aroma likewise. A bit thin though. There’s a lot of darkness in the aroma, with quite evident licorice, as well as roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Good dash of sweetness too. It feels full-bodied at first sip, but it isn’t so full. Quite stickysweet though, and not so dry, even though there’s mocha, coffee and roasted malts. Some faint chocolate too. I would like more hoppy bitterness and some fruityness in the beer, as it is quite low on that. The alcohol can be detected, and gives a little warmth, but it sure isn’t forcing itselves through. It’s a surprisingly easy drinkable beer, but considering it’s 7% ABV, not a session beer. The sweetness of it also suggests it’s not a session beer, and it’s still a little weak if you’re looking for a real treat by the fireplace in the winter, or as a nightcap on a hot summer evening. Guess that leaves it somewhere in the middle, not that I know what that would be. Maybe the last beer before leaving the pub? Flavor is isfairly creamy with chocolate and roasted malt undrtones and a little bit of a stale coffee aftertaste. My complaint is that it is a bit thin and weakly bodied before coffee aftertase sets in.. Stil, very good. Go Wings!!!! pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jun 4, 2008 Pours a dark brown to black, though not impenetrable, with a light brown head, fading. The nose is full of roast and soem sweeter chocolate. A bit of anise. Full. Some small hint of smoke. No fruit in there, not like most foreign stouts. Fuller though not viscous or overcarbonated. Nice. Sweet roast chocolate. Some smoke. A bit of fruit. Lingering fruity smoke. A bit like Kalamazoo stout, though decidedly bigger. JK54B (913), Helsinki, Finland Jun 3, 2008 Draught beer. No head to the almost black body. The flavour is quite singular but huge with hints of rust, roasted malts, caramels and roasted coffee. The palete has a creamy and oily feeling to it. The nose is according to my gf a bit similar to burned plastic witch I find quite accurate Syd (888), Waconia, Minnesota, USA May 27, 2008 Bottle pours black with no head (I tried) - but a tan head if you swirl it in the tulip, and some spot lace. The aroma is coffee, deep malt, very dark chocolate, and the darker of the dark fruits. The flavor is roasty, slightly lactic, oats, chocolate and vanilla as it warms, and really quite nice. The palate is decent enough - thin, but still slick. Overall, I like this well enough.
