3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Bought @ SuperBrugsen, Bramdrupdam. Pours a deep brownish red with a very weak fizzy off white head that completely disappears. Aroma is malty, slightly roasted and a bit of smoke. There is anise and cardemum in there as well. Relatively weak carbonation, making it feel nice and oily. Flavour is sweet, with a grapes, roasted malts, lots of liqourice and anise and a clear raisin edge to it. Finish is relatively bitter, but more from coffee and roasted malts than actually hops. Very nice, and it should mellow nicely in the cellar.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Flaske. Lidt kedelig øl uden så megen karbonering og bid i. Forholdsvis mange brændte noter, hvilket minder om en stout på 4% men ikke en juleøl på 8%. Så lidt tynd i det, men drikbar.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
First time I had this was at its release at Stockholm beer festival on draft in late september, the second time was bottled after the official release in the beginning of November.
In Stockholm it was a muddy brown with no head, while bottle it is a deep red with a medium bubbly brown head, so the appearance is going from 1 in Stockholm to 4 in the bottled version. The aroma is sweet spicy combined with notes of chocolate and berries, the same score applies for both draft and bottle. The flavor is very sweet malty with notes of chocolate, ground cocoa beans, alcohol, cinnamon, raisins, and cardemmome, I find it more complex in the bottle so I raise my score from 6 to 7. The alcohol and power of the body is also much more evident in the bottle, so I raise the score from 3 to 4. The finish is dry and alcoholic with a slight note of berries and wood. I also raise the overall score from 12 to 13. So all in all I gave the draft version, which I found unfinish in Stockholm a 2.8 and the finished bottled product 3.4. I wonder why Nils Oscar presents an unfinish and that raw a product at a festival, it doesn’t do the product any good.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark brown with a disappearing off-white head. Aroma is dominated by dark malt, has spice, wood, smoke, raisin. Rather sweet and fruity, with dark roast malt, and a hint of Christmas spices. Lasting aftertaste of roast malt. This porter note doesn’t work with the otherwise Belgian beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Pours a deep dark brown colour with a nice light brown though short lasting head. The aroma is bustling with spices, smoke, herbs, liquorice and roasted caramel. Good and filling bit sticky mouthfeel. The flavour has a strong roastiness, bitter chocolate and coffee, smoke, liquorice, dark fruits, some herbs, alsohol and bitter hops. Very roasty and spiced sweet bit dry finish. A really tasty brew indeed just bustling with Christmas. Would defenately go great with Scandinavian Christmas dishes.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
UPDATED: DEC 6, 2007 Re-rate from bottle, pasteurised. Pours out in a clear reddish mahogany colour with a silky tan-coloured lace. Plenty of dark fruit like prunes, dates and figs with notes of fudge, almond, mild butter, mild anise, red currant, sweet licorice, subtle cinnamon and subtle alcohol. Full if a bit clean (hence filtration) flavour of anise, nutmeg, dad es, dried cherries with mild dancing spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg. Vinous finish of black currant, moist ed leaves, muscovado sugar, toasted malts and mature red grapes. Strangely, despite it’s a filtered nor bottle-conditioned, this is a minor masterpiece IMHO! Probably the most impressive (and it’s filtered!)and most delicate offering from the Nils Oscar Julöl edition launched for several years! Classy stuff! Hopefully it will gain further in a year or two. I will definitely stock a case of this.!Light years better than the unfinished example I’ve sampled at SBWF-------as you can read or if make a sense.......................
Draught at SBWF. Hazy dark brown with a large creamy beige foam. Yeasty aroma of raisin, caramel, earth and milky chocolate. Sweet malty, sugary and yeasty flavour of fudge, raisin, figs, milky chocolate and licorice. Medium to full-bodied. Long malty warming finish with touches of sweet coffee, fudge, figs, yeast and alcohol. Felt a bit sugary and unrefined but still has potential:7 Ap:3 Fl:7, P:3 Ov. Imp:15 T:3.5

(Draught at Stockholm Beer Festival, 21 Sep 2007) Very dark brown colour with foamy pale brown head. Malty, slightly roasted nose with notes of black-currant and chocolate. Rather vinous. Malty taste with dried fruit, chocolate, dark rye bread, coffee, cocoa, blackberries and black-currant. Fairly dry. Complex, but well balanced. A bit different, but very nice.

(Draught) Pours muddy brown. Yeasty aroma with everything from candy like tones (skumgodis) to sour fruit yoghurt notes. A bit spicy and roasted. Hints of smoke, honey melon, gooseberries and salt. Also light vinous with hints of cherries and black currant. Salty liquorice flavour with fruits and berries in the background. Some chocolate and toffee. Round, soft and quite velvety mouthfeel. Some spicy roast tones lingers. Medium bodied.
