FlacoAlto (3086) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - JAN 5, 2004
This beer is almost pitch black with some deep brown notes. The aroma is of plum and raisins. Quite a fruity nose to this beer, smells sweet as well. I cannot really detect the dark malts in the aroma. My first taste is lightly sweet with a definite twang in the finish. The alcohol is evident in the finish as well. This is a pretty light bodied example for a 12% Imperial Stout. This beer tastes of roasted dark fruit (plum & raisin), and of leathery tobacco. A certain tannic - woodiness is here as well. The roast malt character is fairly light, it is there in the finish but is in balance with the rest of the beer. After all this time aging I can detect no real hop presence. This is quite a well balanced beer, there is no real dominant in-your-face flavors. Quite a refreshing interpretation actually.

As it warms up a bit the roast character begins to assert itself a bit more, though it is still not in the aroma. You can tell that the roast malt character has mellowed considerably over the 2 years of aging. A very malt intensive brew, though fairly dry as an Imperial Stout goes, the malt presence is pretty strong. The alcoholic kick at the end of this beer is definitely reminiscent of rum.
