COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Old Monkeyshine Ale is an exceptional example of a true, traditional-style English Pub beer. Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is medium bodied and possesses a distinct, dark roasted flavor. Its sweet malty taste is derived from liberal use of seven varieties of specialty malts and a touch of brown sugar. Our Old Monkeyshine Ale is dark in color, beginning with a slight caramel malt overtone and rounded with a relatively dry finish from its English Kent Goldings hops. The hops aroma is mildly subdued and the bitterness is just enough to balance the profile of this beer. Nimbus Old Monkeyshine Ale is a true premium ale and is priced accordingly. We’re so proud of this beer for its body, taste, alcohol content and drinking enjoyment, it may just become our signature beer. Be warned: its wonderful malty sweetness camouflages the 8.0% alcohol by volume content. It’s a winner!

12 fl oz / 355mL bottle into a pint glass. Served cold. Aroma: Dark roasty malt. A little caramel, but mostly just malt. Appearance: Dark, translucent rust body, sparse off-white head. Taste: All roasty, semi-sweet malt, and a little bit of caramel again. Palate: You don’t taste the 8.2% alcohol. At all. Short finish. Mild sweetness, mild bitterness. Overall: Great beer. Watch out! It will creep up on you and mess you up. Drinks easy, nice and malty, but dangerous haha.

Draft. Aroma is a sweet yeast with some Carmel malt. Appearance is a dark brown with some lacing. Taste is almost of a dark esb. Some sweetness is in there as well. Palate is pretty mild. Overall, a good beer. Would buy again. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap at Taco Mac. Nice looking pour - dark reddish brown with a creamy light tan head. Aroma is caramel apple, butterscotch, toasted malt and molassess. I liked the aroma better than the taste presented the toasted malt and caramel, but not a lot of complexity. There was a kind of metallic taste that kept creeping in and a bit more sourness than i prefer. Finishes dry with a lingering bitterness. Mouth feel was fairly thick despite only moderate carbonation. Interesting brew, glad I’d tried.

Cloudy brown pour, head dissipated quickly except for a bit around the edge of the glass. Good toasty aroma, but light. Good flavor of toasted malt, with a hint of caramel on the finish. A very nice beer.

Bottle thanks to Hillbilly: Pours a dark red and brown color, clear with very low carbonation. Musters a tiny head for about 10 seconds before fading away. Aroma of malt sugars and red apples and some herbal hops. Not what i was expecting. Flavor is very malty and fruity, lots of the red apple flavor, some red grapes in there as well, carmel. molasses and some toasty roasted malt and a medium nice earthy and floral hop bitterness. Medium body that approaches thick. Finishes fairly dry and kinda crisp. Very unique and satisfying.

Nose of raisins and heavy malts. Well-carbonated. Roasted caramel and toffee flavors dominate, with some raisins in the background. Pretty good, one of my all time Tucson favorites.

Bottle pours dark reddish brown; comes across somewhat bitter at the start but good balance at the finish.

Beyond entertaining names and labels, Nimbus had failed to impress and so my suspicions of the brewer were to remain mediocre without an intervention of my last two contenders. Unfortunately, Old Monkeyshine was not the miracle I hoped for. In appearance it gloomed coagulating red, and bubbled a custard froth. Metallic grape juice emerges on the nose, followed by tinny malts of the caramel and coffee varieties, and a melange of fruity and earthy qualities. Cherry and unmistakable watermelon appear at first, but soon reveal the more pungent aromas of walnut and raw pumpkin. An awkward sensation of sour grapes replaced the metallic aspect on the tongue, engulfed in bland chocolate malts, raw pumpkin and piney hops. The palate is pleasantly soft and certainly hides its alcohol, but finishes in a bumbling bitter and sour aftertaste. Unique, but not the profile I enjoy.
