Bottle from Rheged, Penrith. This black beer pours with a thin tan head, it has rich chocolate and smoked flavours with a roasted, nutty coffee finish. Very full-flavoured considering its relatively low ABV.

Cask @ Old Chapel, Darwen. Darker brown in colour with a reddish hue. Has a thick frothy head. Rich and smooth to an extent, but both aspects are understated. Has a small smokiness.

Cask conditioned at York Beer Fest ’13. Black with cream head. Quite a sweetish beer, some caramel, some toffee a hint of roasty malts although a touch thin on the palate. There is a late coffee note. It’s ok.

On cask at the Croglin Castle Hotel, Kirkby Stephen. It certainly looks the part, pours black with a tan head. Far too sweet and sickly for a porter, thin and flat. Very disappointed.
