Deep mahogany color, big frothy light brown head.
Lots of sweet caramel and roasted barley smells. Spicy woodsy hops there also.
Mouthfeel is very soft and smooth on this medium-heavy brew.
Taste is sweet and toasty caramalts and roasted barley thats balanced by spicy herbal/woody hops with a hint of citrus peel. Pretty drinkable.
Tejas (582), Dallas, Texas, USA Jul 18, 2008 Hmmm, normally I love these big red brews but this one seemed to be lacking something but then again I’m comparing against Lagunitas’ and Alesmith’s imp red which I loved both. Still solid though and well balanced. Glad I tried it. ChainGangGuy (1463), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA Jul 17, 2008 Appearance: Pours a dark mahogany-hued body with a thin ring of white bubbles up top.
Smell: Toasted grains and caramel with a distant, though distinct spicy hoppiness.
Taste: Grainy, caramel maltiness with a light amount of sweetness. Even some roast in there too. Spicy, woody hop character with a medium-high bitterness. Hint of lemon zest. Dry, grainy finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Adequate and drinkable, I’ll give it at least that much. robforbes (644), Bremerton, Washington, USA Jul 17, 2008 pour is a brown with a red tint, small mocha head, excellent lacing.
smell of cocoa, caramel, malt, roasted nuts.
taste is creamy, hoppy, bitter-sweet chocolate, touch of nuts, brown sugar, ends nicely bitter, malt, touch of citrus.
overall a well rounded strong ale. ABUSEDGOAT (1872), California, USA Jul 12, 2008 Darker amber color. Aroma is malt dominated with notes of sweet caramel and crystal malt. Grapefruit and citrus there as well. Medium to full body, fairly sweet. fuya_jo (215), Portland, Oregon, USA Jul 5, 2008 Pours to an opaque red/brown color. Not much head. Caramely, roasty aroma. Taste is fantastic. Lots of hops in the aftertaste, some sweetness. Need to re-rate to get more exact info. Regardless, it was the best red I’d had.
