R&D Series. In the age old tradition of brewing Barley Wines, we brew two big mashes and take only the first runnings to make Critical Hit. We then sparge the grains to make a second beer (historically referred to as a Small Beer) to create the Little One. This beer is a drinkable 5.7% alcohol that has much of the rich malt flavor of its bigger relative but not the bite. Little One is mildly bittered with 100% German Haulertauer hops and is also dry hopped to maximize the lovely aroma.

On tap @Moon Under Water. Ruddy amber with tan head. Lightly toasted malt aroma -- caramel and biscuit. Dryly sweet and creamy smooth, but a little too subtle for my tastes.

On tap. Pours a red/ amber with light head. Aromas of toasted malts and maybe a hint of brown sugar. Flavours of malts and bitter resin. The dregs of a barley wine.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a fairly clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma of medium dark fruits, citrus hops, and some perfume. Flavour is dry and fruity, with some citrus fruits, a metallic tinge, and a very dry hoppiness. Dry mouthfeel with not really any barley wine qualities given that this is billed as a mini barley wine. Decent stuff.

Tap at ECT. Cloudy brown-gold pour with a brief white head leaving no lace. Nose is caramel corn and roasted malt. Meduum-light body with moderate, sharp carbonation. Fruit pits, biscuit, resin and caramel. Fairly dry, with some astringency, which is to be expected. Still has the Ninkasi house flavor, but I did enjoy this one.

Draft at special brews. Pours a murky dark amber with a loose tan head. Beautiful malty caramel nose. Creamy medium body with light carb. Lots of malty residual caramel on the mid palate with a sweet malty finish. Quite dimensional and forward for a second runnings beer.
