In the age old tradition of brewing Barley Wines, we brew two big mashes and take only the first runnings to make Critical Hit. We then sparge the grains to make a second beer (historically referred to as a Small Beer) to create the Little One. This beer is a drinkable 5.7% alcohol that has much of the rich malt flavor of its bigger relative but not the bite. Little One is mildly bittered with 100% German Haulertauer hops and is also dry hopped to maximize the lovely aroma.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a fairly clear amber with a small beige head. Aroma of medium dark fruits, citrus hops, and some perfume. Flavour is dry and fruity, with some citrus fruits, a metallic tinge, and a very dry hoppiness. Dry mouthfeel with not really any barley wine qualities given that this is billed as a mini barley wine. Decent stuff.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a cream head. Light malt and light caramel aroma. Citrus and light malt flavor. Medium bodied. Citrus and light malt linger with light caramel.

Pours light amber with a foamy off-white head and a toffee aroma. There is a medium-bodied caramel malt flavor with a dry finish. It’s pretty flavorful since it is a second running of a good barleywine.

Draft at special brews. Pours a murky dark amber with a loose tan head. Beautiful malty caramel nose. Creamy medium body with light carb. Lots of malty residual caramel on the mid palate with a sweet malty finish. Quite dimensional and forward for a second runnings beer.

Draught. Pours a hazy liht brown color with a small white head on it. Nose is bready with just a little bit of caramel in there. Taste is actually a bit earthy, to the point that it almost feels dirty. Doesn’t sit well on the palate. Meh.

Fake pint on tap at Beer Revolution. Listed as Ninkasi Small Beer at 5.3%. Not sure how you get a small beer to get to be 5.3%, but whatever. Fairly faint aroma with a light, grassy, spicy hop nose. Light caramel malt sweetness present. Transparent orange-amber body with a small, off-yellow head. Starts a bit sweet and somewhat malty with caramel flavors. Becomes a little metallic, spicy, and grassy. Mild hop bitterness. Very drinkable.

On tap. Pours a red/ amber with light head. Aromas of toasted malts and maybe a hint of brown sugar. Flavours of malts and bitter resin. The dregs of a barley wine.

Tap at jones radiator This beer is amber with excellent clarity and when I smell it, I smell esters. There are sweet malt notes and banana hits interwoven with a sweet alcohol base. It tastes sweet and soapy. There’s minimal bitterness and I wouldn’t call this an ESB. It is a second rubbings beer and doesn’t classify well IMO. As mentioned, the malts seem to have undergone too much sparring and over extraction attempts ended in a dry and disappointing profile. Glad this is a one time. Serving type: on-tap 12-31-2011
