R&D Series. Beer made by brewers who received scholarships from brewers making beer! The Sasquatch Legacy Project, started by Walking Man Brewing and recently transitioned to Ninkasi Brewing, invites each year’s Glen Hay Falconer Scholarship recipients to come to our brewery and make a beer together. Proceeds from this beer go to support the Glen Hay Falconer Foundation and the Northwest Legends Foundation, whose mission is to educate brewers and support the community in memory of our lost brewing friend Glen Falconer. Dave Pendelton of Dick’s Brewing, Brett Thomas of Silver Moon and Eugene’s own Jason Carrier of Falling Sky — all 2011 scholarship recipients — along with Chip Hardy of the Bier Stein, and Jamie Floyd from Ninkasi, came together to create this beer. The team brewed the Sasquatch Legacy Beer in memory of Mike West, a friend of Glen’s who started West Brother’s Brewing (among other places), who we lost last year to a heart attack. Mike was also known for starting Food for Lane County’s biggest fundraiser: Chef’s Night Out. As a home-brewer, and at his brewery, he made a signature Honey Orange Wheat beer. The Sasquatch Legacy Wheat Wine is brewed in honor of his service to both Eugene and Bend!

A wheat wine is a barley wine strength beer that is made with a large amount of wheat in its grist. Wheat wines are typically smoother than their barley wine cousins with the wheat exhibiting toasted, bready, and bock-like malty richness. The Falconer’s Flight hops used for bittering are balanced with the earthy and grassy Willamette and Brewer’s Gold hops. Elegant, full-bodied maltiness with a balanced finish, this is a big beer with a little bite!

"Grassy hops, caramel and fruit. Very interesting and very tasty brew. The slight difference between this and your typical barley wine, mainly the fruity character, make this a unique sipper."

On tap at Bittercreek a couple of times recently... tannish almost yellow 2 finger head rises quickly and dies back pretty fast too... the brew is hazy orange amber. Nose shows strong maltiness without the sweetness... a bit of orange (juice not zest)... toasty malt.... EtOH is definitely present, but is drowned out a bit by the thick malt profile. Toasty bread with a definite orange note... flavor is lackluster... not enough hoppiness to battle the thick malt flavor.... again, sweet, big malt flavor component... almost like a toasted biscuit with a smear of orange jam.. Body is thick... coating... little carbonation doesn’t help... Only okay... unlike most wheatwines... could use more hops/bitterness and lesser body...

On tap at manito tap house. Gold with a creeping rim of fine whites. Smells of apples, phenols, vanilla and marshmallow cream. Taste is apples, alcohol, sweet wheat, and hints of well, more apples. Obese bodied with light Carb. I wouldn’t call this good. Serving type: on-tap 12-10-2012

On tap at Bottleworks, Seattle. Hazy orange with a creamy head that quickly fades. Sweet citrus aroma with a hint of vanilla. That sums up the taste too. I pick up some resinous citrus hops and the familiar lightness that wheat brings to proceedings. I can’t fault it too much, but wheatwine will never be my favourite style.

Golden brew with thin white head. Smell is musty and grapey. Taste is sweet and winey with hints of piney hops. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Decent brew. A little weird for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draught at Lucky Labrador Barleywine and Big Beer Festival. 2012 vintage. Apple juice aroma. Much less hop forward than barleywine, but still a caramel sweetness on finish.

Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Fireweed honey in color, thin white frothy head, little lacing.   Pale fruity nose, strong in that the alcohol is noticeable.   On the tongue there is a lot of strong pale fruitiness, apple and pear skin.   Not hoppy, and not all that malty.   As a Wheat Wine I wouldn’t expect it to be either, but as it is its not very malty, bitter, or sweet, or hefty, so I have my concerns.   Lighter overall.   Clean, body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Not a robust example, a lighter example of a Wheat Wine.   Tiz okay, but wished it were a bit more viscous and hefty.

On tap at The Copper Hog, pours a hazy golden orange with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malts, brown sugar, wheat and booze. Flavour is full of apple juice, light toffee, brown sugar and booze. Light-bodied, sweet, and boozy. Pretty interesting for a style I’m not normally intrigued by.
