Pours a lasting ring of beige head with a golden-amber body. Aromas of mangos and passion fruit. Flavors are much the same with a slight citrus note. Finish is dry, slightly bitter.

Chill-hazed vermilion, topped with at least two fingers of frothy off-white marshmallow fluff that crackles away at is leisure. Some craggy patterns of lace remain on the glass as it goes. Candied grapefruit mixed with spirals of lemon peel in the nose. Overripe oranges, caramel and biscuits make up the backbone in a very solid aroma. The flavor: sweet tangerine flavors mix with grapefruit bitterness, burnt sugar and sticky alcohol while floral/herbal fumes permeate the mouth. Sugars linger after the swallow, as do pithy bitterness and subtle hits of biscuit. Smooth yet sticky, the mouthfeel lends itself to the flavor. Microscopic bubbles break out of the medium-light body as it moves, making it even more silky. Hop bitterness an ethanol burn combine to lend the liquid an almost peppery spiciness. A highly enjoyable sugar-citrus mix that toes the line between IPA and barleywine.

Transfer from BA review on 4-27-14- Poured from bottle into a pint glass Appearance – The beer pours a hazy orange amber color with a one finger head of pure white foam. The head fades fast at first, but settles to a very persistent thin white foam film that floats atop the brew. This foam film lasts for quite some time, eventually fading to leave a lighter level of lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is rather light for an imperial IPA. It is strongest in a grapefruit citrus aroma that is nearly matched by some orange and tangerine smells. Along with these smells are some other hoppy aromas of a grassy and floral nature with a bit of a bready smell rounding them all out. Taste – The taste begins with a bready and slightly sweet flavor of a tropical fruit and tangerine nature. At the start of the taste there is a doughy flavor with this taste being maintained throughout the flavor profile. Some hop flavors of a pine and floral nature are present from the start as well with these fading a bit as the flavor advances forward. While the aforementioned hop flavors fade, a grapefruit hop flavor comes to the tongue, with it growing stronger and stronger, both replacing and well surpassing the other hop flavors. The grapefruit hop really picks it up a notch at the end of the taste, which overall ends up leaving a rather lingering bitter grapefruit rind like flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the lower side. Both the qualities really accentuate the hop flavors of the brew and really accentuate the grapefruit hop flavors of the brew, which is quite good for the style. Overall – A decent but not out of this world double IPA. The bitter grapefruit is a little to overpowering at the end of the taste bringing a bit of unbalance. Overall though a decent try.

UPDATED: OCT 17, 2014 22 oz bottle from Albertson’s in Hillsboro, OR. Aroma is piney, citrusy, and malty, with hints of caramel, orange, resin, and barnyard. Mouthfeel and taste begins creamy and sweet, and finishes sweet with a long, gentle bitterness. This is still my all-time favorite beer. Yes, that’s right...#1.

A really nice Double IPA. Very rich and citrusy, tons of orange zest with some subtle floral aroma. Picked up in SF in 2014.

A great beer but then Ninkasi does not know how to build a bad beer. Excellent creamy head. Slight grapefruit taste, wonder how they got that! Most excellent taste, got it from growlerguys, Bend in my growler. After two weeks, with CO2 re-charge from hand charger after every pour, just about as fresh as ever. A damn near perfect Imperial IPA . Don Hague

Bottle. Light to moderate roasted and caramel for the malt, heavy grapefruit for the hops, light soap for the yeast, with notes of ginger, root vegetables and some light dried fruit. Head is small, frothy with bigger bubbles, slightly off-white with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is clear medium amber. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes lightly sweet and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy with a lively carbonation. The grapefruit hop profile in this DIPA is superb.

"this was a bot too mellow for an imperial, or even a regular ipa. in a head to head it suffered. may have been old, but there’s no date, so the brewer would be to blame there. fairly aromatic hops, but just a little sweet and bitter flavor, with a too thin body. not impressed, and i’ve had pretty good luck with them so far."

Great orange clear pour, light head, great hoppy aromas, initial flavor is a crisp ale, the finish is strong hops, not skunky maybe a little floral

Orange, white head. Smels like fresh piney hops. I like a DIPA that isn’t too sweet, and this one fits the bill nicely. Plenty of caramel malts, but hops are the star. Nice!
