Finally, Ninkasi is beginning to expand their dark beer line. It is a very tasty beer, but the Vanilla is a bit too forced, unnatural tasting. It needed to be less evident. Oh well, maybe the second batch will be better.

Bottle. If you love vanilla then you will love this one. Aroma of chocolate and vanilla. Taste is the same. Palate was just a bi thinner than I would prefer, but that was not a hinderance as it made this quite quaff-able. Finished sweet. Overall: Decent

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours dark brown with a creamy to frothy light brown head that leaves excellent lacing. Aroma of chocolate and dark malt. Medium sweet, lightly bitter, full body with a somewhat overpowering flavor of vanilla, mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with soft carbo, notes of chocolate and coffee leading to a lightly bitter finish that turns sticky in the far finish.

22 ounce bottle. Pours almost black with a nice tan head. Aroma of malt, vanilla, and chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, and coffee. Some bitterness at the finish. Just a touch too much vanilla for me. Very good.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours dark and inky, with a thin tan head, decent retention. Aromas of oats, chocolate, vanilla, toast, and some earthy hop notes. Full body, creamy, lightly dry, low carbonation. Medium sweet, a hint of tartness, medium lingering bitterness. Well balanced, and an enjoyable mix of malts and adjuncts.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz bottle, poured into a shaker. The aroma is oatmeal with vanilla, mild coffee, light bourbon, and some caramel. The vanilla note strengthens late and a mellow, woody anise also appears. The beer is a rich, dark coffee brown hue with a tan, dense foam head that has good retention and lace. The taste is a balanced medium, chocolate bittersweet. The creamy and smooth texture has a foamy carbonation with a medium body containing notes of vanilla, oatmeal, coffee, and a light caramel. The smooth finish has a tone of bittersweet dark chocolate that turns towards more vanilla and cream. Later, the flavor of coffee and mild woody spice strengthens. The sticky aftertaste has mild notes of dark chocolate coffee with a woody spice thatís lingering and turns toward oatmeal and vanilla. Pleasant complexity for a mild stout.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bomber to glass. Long day of drinking, but this is really just a roasted barley and artificial vanilla concoction/mess. Not too enjoyable. Everything tastes forces and genetically modified.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Appearance: clear deep brown with two fingers of rocky tan head, good retention and patchy lacing. (4/5) Aroma: dark chocolate, vanilla, oats, dark roasty malt, liquorice, floral. (7/10) Taste: moderately strong sweet, moderately strong bitter. (7/10) Palate: full body, moderate-low carbonation, mild lingering bitter and warming finish. (4/5)
Nice. Very sweet, but reasonably well balanced with a decent bitter and an emphatic but not overwhelming vanilla. Itís a touch hot in the finish, though, and the bitter lingers long after the sweet is a distant memory. Not saying thatís a bad thing - just the facts. Iíd have this again, and Iíd like to try the non-vanilla version for comparison. (15/20)
