3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Jimthechap (1195) - Christchurch, NEW ZEALAND - JAN 31, 2012
Hazy tawny colour with a cream coloured head that receded into the glass. Aromas of dates and milk chocolate, but not overly sweet. Upon tasting those flavours come back up and add a chocolate cake note but also bitter cocoa. This puts me in mind of enjoying a good cigar with this (but unfortunately the Mrs is handy and wouldn’t tolerate me lighting up). A beer to make you sit and think about what you’re drinking, which is laudable.

Cask@The New Wheatsheaf, London. Rubyish brown colour with a small beige head. Aroma is sweet and mildly toasted malts along with some roasted notes as well. Flavour is bigtime maltyness, some toffee and mild liquorice and chocolate as well. Not the stereotype old ale, but still a very pleasant brew.

Pours mahogany with a well-retained tan head lacing the glass. Soft, seductive aroma melding blueberry, milk chocolate coated caramel, a whisper of rauch. Slippery and nuanced with a lip-smacking interplay of well done herbal sausages, chocolate, berry fruit and gentle, cigar smoky malt. Well rounded, sluggable stuff- winner all round.

Cask at GBBF, day 3 on 3 August 2006. Cloudy dark brown appearance. Plenty of malt. Dry powdery chocolate in the flavour. Some fruity notes. More like a porter or a stout than an old ale. Rather tasty, whatever it is.
