For this year’s Brew Ho Ho we got together with Beachwood BBQ and Brewing to bring you this Winter Warmer with Cinnamon and Coffee from Portola Coffee Lab in Costa Mesa.

Bomber from a recent trade shared with westmeister. Late in the evening and this one probably put me over the edge but it was worth it. Chew caramel and dark fruit flavors. Take your time with this one. Lightly roasted malt, full body. Dark and rich mouthfeel. Little bit of alcohol but most of it is coming together well.

Jrob21 snuck this one in at the tailend of a solid tasting. Super sipper for sure. Spiced, mocha, light coffee, cotton candy and marshmellow, vanilla, caramel, roasted malts. All in all this is a mellow beer, but is complex in the variety of flavors it delivers. Quite sweet, but not overly cloying with just a hint of booze

Bomber from Bine & Vine. Pours hazy orange/amber with a slight transient beige head. Aroma is primarily coffee. Med + body. Flavor is coffee, a bit of treacle, some spice, maybe some hop. Most of this is coffee. Coffee with caramel/treacle. Not so bad. Tasty even, in an unusual way.

Great name, goes downhill from there. Odd sour spicy aroma. Strange vegetal taste with grape cough drops and nuts. Decent thin palate. Vegetal finish with grape skins.

This is coffee bean and chocolate on the nose. Not your typical deep espresso, but ground coffee. Some caramel, cinnamon, and allspice. Hazy brown in color with minimal off white head. Body is thick but not full, if that’s possible. More dry coffee flavors top the nuts, caramel, and milk chocolate. This beer is not sweet, not bitter, and not boozy. Just not sure about this one. Need time to explore.

dark red copper color. Cinnamon and perfect coffee on the nose. Medium thick mouthfeel. Nice balance of cinnamon and coffee. Slightly warming

S: Roasted coffee, molasses, brown sugar, coffee beans, cinnammin, and overall just a rich coffee smell. P: Reddish/brown with a thin head, a very murky beer. T: Coffee, with a heavy spice, some cinnammin in there, nutmeg, rye, charred malt, with a light warm finish from the booze. M: Its light and syrupy and there is just a hint of roast in this beer. O: Not too famialiar with winter warmers but this wasnt bad.

Pours a cloudy brown with a nice head. Strong aroma of coffee with some hazlenut. Taste has more coffee with some roasted malts. Long finish.

Short: Robust coffee experience in winter warmer form

Origin: 22oz from El Cerrito Liquor Size: 4oz Glass: Glazen Toren stemware Price: $10 Date: 1/18/14
Long: Low haze, red amber pour with large, yellowish head. Great lacing. High carbonation/nucleation. Nose is really nice spiced latte- dense, rich, assertive and impressive to three craft beer newbies. In taste, there is a bit of a charred, seasoned tomato along with the intended mocha flavors. Mild lemon juice acid from coffee extraction. Not harsh or overly sour though like most coffee beers. Nice to see Portola and Noble working together to make some of the world’s best coffee beers. Still needs work, but lots of talent here.
Flaws: Tomato, char, ash
Skill Level: Coffee beer master

piney citric spicy lightly sweet oxidized coffee. Lots of oxidation. Sherry. lightly creamy feel. Bittersweet finish
