Bomber from the brewery. A big burst of carb upon opening and a monstrous rocky white head. Good head retention and lacing. Clear copper body. Aroma of citrus, resin and tropical hops with malt toffee malts. The taste is herbal, tropical, citrus, melon hop notes, toffee malts. Medium bodied, decent balance, very slight heat. Solid DIPA

My first NC beer. Name is bit of a misnomer -- not a West Coast IPA. Strong honey notes in flavor also discernible in aroma. Reminds me of Bell's HopSlam in that respect. Overall good, but not as balanced as HopSlam. Beautiful deep color. Hop and resin notes, a bit too syrupy, with muted bitterness. I'm being overly critical, tho -- this is a fine brew. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bomber from Sam’s, Durham. Decent try from the Charlotte newcomers but I wasn’t wholly convinced. Very attractive pour, a deep orange with a light fluffy head. Nose was pungent and floral, sweet but not boozy or overwhelming. Any time you read that honey is added to a DIPA, you assume it’s a Hopslam rip. But not here. What they seem to be going for is a big West Coast pineapple bomb, with honey playing the role of mango. None of that bracing, bitter, Kiwi-ish stuff here. It works intermittently, but at times comes across as a clashing, acrid, boozy mess. As Custy wrote, maybe if they’d actually delivered it to stores on time I’d have a different opinion. Solid but could be miles better.

Bottle from JCB - thanks! Deep amber orange pour with plenty of frothy white head and good lacing. Aroma is sweet candied fruits, malt, citrus hopping, berry, and a bit of pine. Flavor is malt forward with plenty of sticky sweetness, orange, and mango and finishing with a mild to moderate citrus/pine hop bitterness. While not a hop bomb, I found this brew to be quite approachable and easy to drink. I feel as though some of sweet fruity notes may be the NZ hops in disguise, as I have brewed with them and they tend to come across quite fruity. Well-crafted despite not seeming to hit the style parameters.

Bottle from bestway and my first foray into this relatively new brewery. A little sticky sweet and resiny ipa. The finish is a little bandaidish sadly. Big body. Seems like this one bit of a little more than it could chew. Would be nice if it was a little toned down and more subtle.

I received this bottle as a gift from my in-laws who were exploring Charlotte one weekend. The beer pours from the bottle with a nice, warm orange-brown color, but there is next to no head. Despite the seemingly inactive pour, the aroma is quite nice, with a bright, fruity combination of orange and pineapple hop characteristics. The flavor is a bit of a let-down, though, with a syrupy malt sweetness that easily overpowers the bright hop characteristics that had dominated the aroma. In addition, the carbonation level seems too low, making the over-sweetness of the flavor seem even more pronounced. Overall, this is a fine, fruity, drinkable double IPA, but it certainly does not stand out from others in the style.

Bottle. Clear amber color, medium white head. Aroma of lemon and orange peel. Taste is sweet caramel and citrus. Closer to a barleywine.

Bottle from Beer Study. Pours a soft mango flesh orange with one finger of sandy tan head. Nose is interesting, extremely vinous and grape-y. Alcohol is a little hot and spicy with some heavy/oily citrus rind coming through. Medium to full bodied with a forward and lasting bitterness, very interesting finish. Almost like grape soda. Tad hot.

Bottle. Pours a slightly hazy amber color with a moderate white head. Nose is a little hoppy, with some floral notes in there. Taste, has a little bit of the hoppy bitterness up front, but an almost sweet and citrusy finish.
