Draft at Nodding Head. Pours a very dark brown, just short of black with some tan head. Nose of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and bready yeast. Sweetish but a little too much yeast coming through for my taste. My least favorite of the beers I had tonight.

Tap at the brewpub. Some big coffee/roast and smelly bathroom aroma, some chocolate. Bubblegum and chocolately flavor, milk, sweetish with mild grain character. Nice body, low carbonation. As with a lot of beers from these guys, the beer is pretty decent but some off flavors really put a damper in the experience.

Aroma is lightly cocoaish. Light Belgian spiciness with a kiss of clove. Slightly phenolic but the chocolate does come through pretty nicely. Soft full palate. Lightly chewy with a lingering sweetness. There is a kiss of licorice flavour as well on the finish. Pretty decent.

blipp (4784) - Newark, New Jersey, USA - MAR 5, 2009
Draft at the Brewpub. Pours near black with a beige head. The aroma is on the light side, with roast and chocolate. Sweet and almost fruity yeast notes mute the roasted malts initially. Chocolate sweetness is present but restrained. Roasted malts come out in the finish. Pretty good.

Tap @ the pub.Poured a very dark brown color with a beige head. Light chocolate aroma with a moderate amount of ash (I hate that). Long cigarette ash in the flavor. Mild notes of dry cocoa. Light-medium body.

draft at nodding head, nose is much more smoky than I anticipated, I mean it is made with some high quality chocolate, but the first thing that hits you is smoke, than coffee, than somewhere there is chocolate. taste is very similiar to the nose, with more roasted notes. finish is chocolaty and dry. very rounded and fluffy mouthfeel.

Draft @ Capone’s. Pours jet-black with a thick, creamy tan head that seems to last to the end. Aroma of roasted malts, semi-sweet chocolate. Flavor is on the sweet side, roasted malts, chocolate. Very creamy. A little on the bland side, but not bad and very easy to drink.

Nitro at Capone’s. Translucent, dark ruby body with a big, creamy tan head. Interesting aromas of chocolate, roast, and dark rum. Flavor has qualities of chocolate extract and substantial lactose sweetness. Ultimately, this seems too sweet and artificial by comparison with other chocolate stouts.
