Sully (1367), Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia Jun 1, 2009 After a real dwahl on the ratings front I am inspired to rate this one. The presentation in the glass is a much deeper borwn than expected, with the haziness that comes from a bottle conditioning later in the pouur. The nose is a melange of good robust IPA hops and fine toffee notes that give it a great balance. The ABV is noticeable but not overtly so. As we get closer to winter in the southern hemisphere I agree that it is a better beer for the cooler months. A very good beer and fine introduction to a popular brewer. The $20 price tag for the beer is not a concern as it is worthy of the accolades given to it. sebletitje (1880), Tampa, Florida, USA Jun 1, 2009 pours dark brown with thick off white head.
Aroma has notes of hops, dark fruits with currants, pine, wheat and roast.
Taste, malty, hoppy, with nice addition of dark fruits, some spices and light berry chocolate mouthfeel.
Thick palate with light bittersweet fruits and good abv. Some brown sugar.
sneagrams3 (1704), St. Louis, Missouri, USA Jun 1, 2009 Tasted 5/24/09. 500ml bottle. Dark, murky brown hue. Finger width of beige head. Bright hops and subtle spices fill the olfactory. Rather full bodied with a nice dichotomy of dull and dry mixed with sweet and sticky. Great palate with a pronounced effervescence. Nice bitter hops. Graham cracker malts. Good sweet drink with a big palate. Solid brew! Kestral (191), Oslo, Norway May 28, 2009 Pours dark amber, quite large tan head with tons of lacing. Aroma is inviting with sweet orange, sugars, caramel, raisins, nuts, and some alcohol.
Flavour is quite malty, roasted notes, brown sugar, alcohol, chocolate fudge, with a big citrus hop bitterness in the finish. Fairly smooth on the tongue, medium body. Complex and enjoyable. The sweetness is nicely balanced out by the big hop character. hallinghansen (263), Odense SV, Denmark May 28, 2009 Bottle. Brown body with a small brown head. Aroma is spice, dark fruit, dates. Flavor is spice, chocolate, dark fruit. Hoppy aftertaste. odgaard (248), Skyum, Thisted, Denmark May 27, 2009 Beautiful beer. Dark marhogny with a lasting beige head. Leaves fine laces on the glass. Aroma: chocolate, malt, citrus, grapefruit, wheat, banana. Taste: very present citrusy hop taste, but has a lot of barley wine notes too, dark fruit, caramel, chocolate. Some alc in the end too, but the 10% i well hidden. Borresteijn (1343), Amstelveen, Netherlands May 23, 2009 50cl Bottle from De Bierkoning. Deep dark brown colour, creamy beige head, pours like syrup. Aroma of creamy chocolate, molasses, a little bit of alcohol, grapefruit hoppiness. Flavour is very soft, thick and sweet first, molasses, chocolate, followed by a good drying zesty grapefruit bitterness. Fullbodied, thick mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Nice twist on the DIPA style. JonL (6), Toodyay, Australia does not count May 20, 2009 Really interesting - sort of an Imperial Pale ale with Barley wine overtones.
