scoth (266), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Apr 11, 2009 Pours dark brown, almost black, with a huge two-finger beige head, long lasting lacing. Smells of grapefruit, pine, apple, molasses and chocolate. Medium thick body. Tastes of bitter chocolate, coffee, bread, citrus and pine. Medium bitter finish. Delicious. RSRIZZO (1332), Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Apr 10, 2009 Color is a solid amber with very good carbonation and a thick, super tight off white head. Aroma is amazing, its rich and sweet with the scent of dried fruit, caramel and a hint of hops. Taste is complex, rich and hoppy. Starting with a full body it goes down creamy with a rich feel. Finish jumps out sweet with dried fruit taste, then some malt and a sweet floral hop flavor that is followed by a bold bitterness. In the after taste the bitterness builds a touch then some caramel taste that fades to a faint alcohol feel. This is just a flat-out excellent Imperial IPA with big bold rich flavors. I can see how someone could make the mistake of labeling it as a Barley Wine. jesperhammer (260), Copenhagen, Denmark Apr 5, 2009 Fantastic beer, nothing less.
I have had it three or four times, and I was curious about the outcome of my first rating it.
Very dark brown without being porterish. Huge everlasting head. Quite impressing.
The nose is mostly yeasty, but also i bit bitter. The taste is fantastic. Quite malty for a DIPA, and very hoppy for a Barley Wine.
And it is likewise with the taste. You keep finding these contrasting elements of bitterness and sweetness. It is very complex, and the aftertaste just goes on and on.
Certainly a favourite, and the price is actually OK. Adam77 (407), Eastampton, New Jersey, USA Apr 1, 2009 Poured orangish with a white head. Aroma of citrus and pine. Chewy texture with lots of IIPA flavor. Very good. trevor211 (499), Seattle, Washington, USA Mar 29, 2009 Pours darker than I thought it would. For a brew they claim is an IIPA, this is really dark. Thick, pillowy head that lasts a while. Nose is certainly like a barley wine - slightly boozy malts with a strong hop backbone. Nice aroma. The malts almost bring out a banana note, adding to the darker fruits, raisins and citrus hops. Flavor is great - this is super-smooth, and has a great balance, right on the aroma. Very, very good! (And no way this is a IIPA.) darn1207 (528), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Mar 29, 2009 bottle. pours a dark brown with reddish tint and a big bubbly light tan head. almost no lacing. sweet aroma of dark fruits and citrus hops. flavors of caramel, raisin and yeast are quickly taken over by a resiny hop and smokey vibe. some of the alcohol comes through in the end also. the medium palate is a strange combination of slick and tingly - in a good way. doesn’t look or taste like any DIPA I’ve ever had. the hop bitterness seems to overwhelm the malt character - but overall there is a lot to like here. bfeldmann (1042), Wilmington, Delaware, USA Mar 23, 2009 Poured a light brown/orange color with okay head which left a thin covering through out the beer. Aroma was of pine hops caramel malts some light citrus. Flavor was much the same HUGE hops for sure, but there was more malts in there then I expected Very good beer.
LarsEngen (99), Sandvika, Norway Mar 16, 2009 50 cl bottle, batch 348. Dark amber color with a gigantic creamy light brown head.
Aroma is very hoppy with notes of chocolate, roasted malt and sigar. Flavor is sweet and hoppy with a long bitter end. Very complex beer that is very drinkable due to vell hidden alcohol (10% abv)
