Commercial Description:
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor's note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery says it's brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was a glitch. In Europe it's sold as an IIPA.

Bottle from Cracked Kettle. Dark brown body with large head. Nose of sugar and hops. Sweet up front, then gets very hoppy. Smooth and goes down well. High ABV very well hidden. Finish of malts, raisins and toffee. Lovely.

Bottled @ Opus K, Lohja, Finland. Batch 365 brewed 28.5.08. Appearance aroused some prejudices to this beer. Hazily dark brown, slightly greyish. Lots of yeast particles floating in the glass. Quite thin head lasts well. Aroma is really herbally hoppy with a hint of flowers. It’s also somewhat boozey ( gets highlighted even more when cold), sweetly caramelly, and spicy with coriander, and yet the aroma is slightly vapid. Flavor is slightly booze, herby hops, quite a lot of spices and sweet caramel. Quite a lot of bitter hops in the aftertaste. Lightly carbonated and as the beer warms also oily and viscous on the palate. There’s this booze coming through all the time , even though it also warms your stomach nicely. I really wouldn’t call this a DIPA. This is more like a mix of everything without it’s own, deepest essence, at least, I didn’t catch that. This was a disappointment to me, a grave one. I hate to give such low points to this but even with the most optimistic optimism I just can’t score this higher. I’m not giving up with this yet and should I get another chance to try this, I would.

16.9 oz. bottle. shared with Gabe. Pours a thickish, small bubbled head, with a bit of sediment staining, attractive lacing over a slightly cloudy, dark brown (SRM 20) body....nose of pine -Columbus and citrus -Centennial hops, with coffee/chocolate tones coming in.....tastes initially of heavy molasses, next coffee/chocolate then balancing hop come, with a pleasantly sweet, and bitter hop combination....mouth feel is thick and chewy with creamy carbonation. Rating as a DIPA. It would be a little light on the mouth feel for a Barley Wine. I really liked this brew.

Pours dark brown, almost black, with a huge two-finger beige head, long lasting lacing. Smells of grapefruit, pine, apple, molasses and chocolate. Medium thick body. Tastes of bitter chocolate, coffee, bread, citrus and pine. Medium bitter finish. Delicious.

Color is a solid amber with very good carbonation and a thick, super tight off white head. Aroma is amazing, its rich and sweet with the scent of dried fruit, caramel and a hint of hops. Taste is complex, rich and hoppy. Starting with a full body it goes down creamy with a rich feel. Finish jumps out sweet with dried fruit taste, then some malt and a sweet floral hop flavor that is followed by a bold bitterness. In the after taste the bitterness builds a touch then some caramel taste that fades to a faint alcohol feel. This is just a flat-out excellent Imperial IPA with big bold rich flavors. I can see how someone could make the mistake of labeling it as a Barley Wine.

Fantastic beer, nothing less. I have had it three or four times, and I was curious about the outcome of my first rating it. Very dark brown without being porterish. Huge everlasting head. Quite impressing. The nose is mostly yeasty, but also i bit bitter. The taste is fantastic. Quite malty for a DIPA, and very hoppy for a Barley Wine. And it is likewise with the taste. You keep finding these contrasting elements of bitterness and sweetness. It is very complex, and the aftertaste just goes on and on. Certainly a favourite, and the price is actually OK.
