FROTHINGSLOSH (1961), GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA Jan 29, 2009 Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a mahogany color with a large brown head. The aroma was an interestingly complex mix of bitter, harsh fruity hops, a touch of cherry, scotch, wood and spruce. The flavor was sharp with fruit, spruce, pine, tobacco and a faint hint of smoke. The mouthfeel was fairly thick and the alcohol showed through prominently. Very very complex. This beer has some very interesting features but did not quite gel enough to score higher. blklab2007 (932), Connecticut, USA Jan 28, 2009 bottle poured into a snifter has an orange brown color and a heavy coating of off white head that retained well. aroma has sweet malt, peppery hops, sugar sweetness, and spiced yeast. a little musty but nice. mouth feel is medium but coats well, frothed up with the high carbonation. flavor has some roast, toasted malt, bitter hops, nutmeg, spiced yeast, and something that gives it a twang i cant quite pin down. sweet and bitter with some interesting spices going on. somewhat in a style of it’s own. malrubius (967), Valley Stream, New York, USA Jan 28, 2009 Bottle in snifter. Dark brownish red with nice lasting tan head and lace. Toasted brown sugar aroma with hops yeast and a little warmth. Toasted brown sugar malt with mild dark fruit mild wood and very dry (almost too dry) mildy bitter finish with a little lingering woodsiness. Medium-full body and medium low carbo (and room temp) make for a great creamy mouthfeel. An excellent barleywine...as an IIPA, not so much. BrewCzar (108), St Louis, Missouri, USA Jan 27, 2009 Bottle pours a hazy dark brown with a towering tan head. Sweet malty aroma with fruit notes.Taste is caramel, brown sugar, overripe fruits, hoppy bitter finish. Mouth feel is semi-coating with a good alcohol burn and bitter finish. nkruback (4), Watertown, Massachusetts, USA does not count Jan 27, 2009 Decent head retention, powerful lacing, and a tawny, opaque hue. A nose of slightly aged hops (would’ve been better fresh). Caramel malt and some fruity phenols. Mouth feel is slightly thin, but flavor profile is rocketsauce. Undeniably smooth for 10% ABV. soyorganic (217), Denver, Colorado, USA Jan 23, 2009 Bottle, pours dark brown with a huge frothy head. Aroma isfruity with plum and sherry wine notes, it is also doughy. A much dryer taste than expected from the aroma and color. I probably would not of bought it if it said IIPA on the bottle, but it is a smooth one especially as the beer warms. This beer also has imperial stout characteristics with its dry roasted malt taste. Alcohol is slightly noticeable and the character of the yeast is a nice subtle complement. I enjoy the sweet, vinous taste before the hops take over, although the hops are nice. glennmastrange (805), hobe sound, Florida, USA Jan 22, 2009 Bottle. Heavy malt aromas of dark bread, cereal, toasted and molasses, moderate resin for the hops, light dough for the yeast, with hints of cherry, alcohol, dark dried fruits and faint spice. Head is small, creamy with some larger bubbles, off-white to light brown in color, with good lacing and is mostly diminishing. Color is very dark brown. Flavor is moderately sweet and lightly acidic to start and the long finish is light sweet and acidic and moderately to heevily bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily almost syrupy, and has a lively carbonation. It finishes moderately alcoholic. A great, complex beer with attributes of a Barley Wine, a DIPA and an American Strong. topherh (878), Kearney, Missouri, USA Jan 20, 2009 Pours cloudy light brown. With a one finger beige head. Light hops, caramel, cheesy funk in the nose. Flavor is smooth, bitter hop, roasty malts, licorice, and a bit of chocolate. Well balanced and very enjoyable.
