TeamTrappist (362), jericho, New York, USA Dec 4, 2008 Bottle. Poured deep and solid brown with an orange hue. Nose is of sweet hops, and a hint of alcohol. The label calls it barley wine, and here it is listed as an 2xIPA but it is sort of neither, or what do I know, lol. What I do know is that it is really good. It has real nice hop flavor, slightly floral, and a bit sweet. To me what makes this so good is the delicious malt base. It balances this beer well and makes it super drinkable. The 10% is barely noticeable, well maybe a little. Finish is quite bitter and long lasting. Very good beer. garmonbozia (225), Hattiesburg, Mississippi, USA Oct 28, 2008 Bottle courtesy of my man Styles, thanks Chris. Very dark beer with nice head. Smell was of sweet with malt. taste was of course bitter, but with some sweetness as well. Reminds me of a porter. Very nice drfabulous (1211), Columbia, Missouri, USA Oct 28, 2008 Very much enjoyed this one. But I also drank it with two barley wines on the table. Sweet. Malty. A typical Double IPA that kicks it up a notch. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Oct 23, 2008 Deep brown colored body with just a hint of dark copper when held to light. A large, dense khaki head sits on top of the dark colored body. The smell is like milk chocolate and light oranges were mixed together in a desert. There is also a little bit of fresh bread dough. The taste is lightly sweet with iced tea and some orange peels. There is also some milk chocolate in the finish with hints of roast. The body is amazingly light and playful for a beer of this abv. tarheels86 (700), Washington DC, USA Oct 20, 2008 Updated: Jul 21, 2009500 mL bottle from Belmont Station, Portland, OR. Wow! I see this is not a barleywine as the label indicates. Instead it is a dark double IPA. Awesome. Pours a cloudy dark brown with a two to three fingered dark tan head that lasts for a long time. Small amount of carbonation and great lacework. Aroma is caramel and apple cider. Mouthfeel is creamy and balanced. Lots of roasted malt, hops, pine, and spice. Maybe some milk chocolate. Alcohol is nicely masked Very warming, complex, and overall excellent. I can see how it may be interpreted as a barleywine but this doe not really fall into any one category of beer. My favorite of the Nøgne Ø family by far. Tmoney99 (4652), Cincinnati, Ohio, USA Oct 19, 2008 Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a reddish brown color with a moderate frothy off-white head that lasted with good to excellent lacing. Heavy complex roasted malt, caramel and earthy hoppy aroma. Medium body with a sticky texture. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. This is a standout beer. Indra (2018), Prairie Village, Kansas, USA Oct 16, 2008 500ml bottle. Nicely hoppy nose, resinous, floral, grassy and citric, combined with a fair amount of darkly toasted malt sweetness and honeyed black bread, perhaps some faint oak as well. Deep mahogany color, bottle-conditioned, with a lasting, fine, ivory head. Flavor begins with a touch of dark roasty malt, turning much hoppier and quite bitter from there with a generous degree of pine, spice and citrus, and finishing with a brief flourish of dark sweetness and malt flavor, mingling with the mighty hop presence and gentle alcohol late. Finely effervescent, sharp and warming on the palate, very full-bodied. An interesting hybrid American-style strong ale, quite nice in fact. LilBeerDoctor (1479), East Setauket, New York, USA Oct 9, 2008 Bottle. Pours black with a thick light tan head. Aroma of slight hops and lots of caramel malt and apple skins with a slight roastiness. Flavor of light roasted malt, light bitter chocolate, with a hoppy finish. Very ASA like or even stout/porter like with the roasted malt presence. Creamy, smooth mouthfeel. Nice beer!
