Aroma: Aromatic and citric hops are complemented by dark fruit and roasted malts and a bit of gumball. Appearance: Darkest brown, opaque, with a billowy tan head that leaves sheets of lace. Flavor: The hops are there in a big way, coniferous and citric, but they are nearly overmatched by a huge spectrum of roast malt flavors, molasses, cola, caramel, aniseed; it’s not until the finish that the lingering hoppy bitterness is clearly distinguishable. Palate: Softly creamy from the carbonation, caramelly thick moments, warming in both an aromatic and an ethanolic way. robinvboyer (1426), Sturgeon Falls, Ontario, Canada

I saw the editor’s note, but still this is the darkest IIPA i have ever seen. Aroma of dark malts, tinges of caramel chocolate, and a sweet grassy hops aroma in the background. Flavour is quite hoppy, some nice grassy, and citrucy notes. After tasting the beer i can see what they are talking about it being an IIPA. Its very hoppy, and bitter, but it has a huge mouthfeel and a creamy maltiness that is a touch roasty and smoky.Really to me this is a hybrid between an IIPA, an american barley wine, and a porter. mjs (1463), Helsinki, Finland

Grassy and hoppy nose with some malty notes. Full bodied palate with quite lot of carbonation. Malts, grass, bitterness, salty liquorice, salty flavours in general and some chocolate. Long lasting bitter and malty aftertaste. ucusty (1881), Wake Forest, North Carolina, USA

What an incredible dark, hoppy, creamy fandabidozzie beer ’cwm by ar my lord this stuff is bloody marvellous’ deliciously sweet, warming and very moreish, marvellous, bloody marvellous Many moons ago I recall an audio football commentary where Norway had beaten the mighty England ’chuckle’ the commentator had gone into overdrive, ’Maggie Thatcher your boys took a helluva beating’ ranted the delirious commentator. It really was quite a fantastic piece of commentary as the commentator brought up all manner of names to thrown at the crestfallen English giants. Well for some bizarre reason this beer reminds me of that commentary, I haven’t got a clue why it just seems like Nognes sticking their fingers up to the rest of the European producers and saying beat that, it really is quite a fantastic beer. Pours a muddy brown with a 2 finger billowy head and nice delicate lacing. Nose is light floral and pine hops and sweet caramel malt. Taste is dark fruits and caramel upfront with a nice bitter resin finish. The label says barley wine while it’s listed as an IIPA here. It’s almost a cross between the two. Nice full mouth feel. Hides the alcohol well. Interesting brew and very good. Thanks G-Spice! vonsolms (25), Måløv, Denmark

Rather dark compared to the similar American verions, but completely fulfils what an IIPA should be - bitter and strong and balanced in the two. At 10% it should taste much stronger, but somehow manages to maintain a smoothness that is disturbingly deceptive. These guys are getting it right. jaymobrown (1353), Chicago, Illinois, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Sep 21, 2008 Pours super dark. Bits of lights at the edge, but overall a really dark thick drink. Tan head that nicely laces as it goes down. Wow. Thick huge roasted flavors in this one.The nose picks up much more lighter notes of hops, floral, etc. The flavor is really malt, caramel, oats, coffee, everything dark and good. The palate is great. Not overly sticky or sweet with some of these beers, which usually makes more than three sips impossible. Clean easy to drink. Highly enjoyable and recommended.
