Commercial Description:
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor's note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery says it's brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was a glitch. In Europe it's sold as an IIPA.

Bottle, Fresh 7/4/8/4/15.

Pours a deep dark brown with a caramel glow. The aromas are all about the nuttiness, the barleywine toffees, even some roast -- but in the flavor, chocolate caramel and grapefruit pith, lovely full smooth mouthfeel with just a touch of heat. This is actually really solid, hard to characterize as either barleywine or IIPA not because it’s some kind of wild experiment but rather because it’s just a very nice beer for what it is and then later, when you try to categorize, the categories don’t quite fit.

This one reminds me of a mellowed-out Stone 11th Anniversary. Really nice.

Two year old bottle, Nov 21 ’09. At two years of age this one -- a harbinger of the Black IPA trend, perhaps -- has really come into its own, and even become something very special. Almost no heat from the 10%, wonderfully rich and smooth. Some serious hop bite remains and powerfully backs the overall flavor, but now the beer is all about the dark smoky chocolates and rich caramels that the heavy malt profile. As it approaches room temperature the complexity shines. A superb strong ale. 8/4/9/5/17=4.4. I’ll average the ratings.

500ml bottle from South Bay Drugs. Barley Wine? Double IPA? Has numerous characteristics from both styles. Pours a very dark brown, darker than most Barley Wines. A thin beige head with a tad bit of lacing. Good size amount of hops on the nose with some toasted malt and dark fruit. Finish was malty and quite bitter.

50 cl bottle shared with Ljunkan @ Bishop’s Arms - Karlstad. Impressive beer! Extreme bitterness, nutty and caramellish flavours. Excellent beer as always from Nøgne Ø. Cheers to our Norweigan friends!

50cl bottle. Pours a really dark brown for an IIPA with a huge foamy, tan head. Aroma is mostly piney hops plus some chocolate. Pleasant flavour with citrus hops, chocolate and coffee. No real hint of the 10 ABV. Really nice twist on the typical IIPA.

Pours a porter brown with a big booming head the color of chocolate milk foam. And odd appearance for either a barleywine or an IIPA. The aroma is more appropriate with a big hoppiness with an herbal quality almost like that of lemon basil and juniper. The flavor is a little odd, though. The Roastiness that usually accompanies a beer this dark is missing, but there is a slight burned flavor underneath the rest and something keeps make me think of lighter fluid in the finish. It’s really not as bad as I’m making it sound because those flavors almost work together.

500ml - Aroma is sharp pine resin hops with a nice dark malt back. Even a little molasses in there. Pours very dark brown with a small head and great lacing. Flavor is a hop blast followed by a nice roasted dark malt finish. Chewy molasses gives it just enough sweetness to counter the hop bitterness. Everything is in perfect balance so that you are never overwhelmed. Alcohol is present but not too strong. Palate is sticky and tart. A great tasting, different sort of DIPA.
