chindong (10), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA May 31, 2008 This has become one of my favorite BW/IIPAs. I love the darkness of it and the great bitterness at the finish. Toffee and strong malts also come through. 17thfloor (1402), Chicago, Illinois, USA May 31, 2008 Pours a viscous opaque dark brown with a fantastic creamy beige froth on top that craters out. Sweet molasses, vinous, malty aroma with some definite alcohol and funk. Thats an interesting taste. So dark and bitter. A little bit plasticy like Davinci points out. Toffee and chocolate, slightly nutty/vinous. The molasses flavor does make it taste very much like an imperial brown. The hops play a similar role like that in a barley wine. Mine has definitely sat for a while and mellowed quite a bit, well balanced. Very dry finish, chocolate. Fantastic mouthful, medium/full with fine subtle carbonation and very fluffy. Very unique. valpoaj (362), Valparaiso, Indiana, USA May 29, 2008 Pours medium reddish brown with a robust, thick head that takes a long time to settle...heavy lacing as well. Aroma is very complex...citrus hops (orange), roasted/chocolate malt, some yeast, and a heavy dose of spice. Flavor is heavy malt up front with some dark fruit flavors, then turns very bitter and heavy on the hops. I can see why this could be classified as a barleywine and an IIPA...I really thought this to be a hybrid of the two...hoppy characteristics in the finish, but the body and complexity often found within a barleywine. Palate is confusing...part of this wants to be a slow drinker as it is pretty heavy, but the bitterness adds an odd component to things. I’ll be honest, this really didn’t do it for me...albeit unique, the mixture of styles just took me for a loop and made this a difficult drink. Very complex beer, but complexity does not always equal a good beer in my book johans (36), Copenhagen, Denmark May 29, 2008 Really not my favorite among DIPAs. Too malty and biscuity. It’s more like a BW, if you ask me! But by no means a bad brew.. bermod (118), Lappeenranta, Finland May 27, 2008 Updated: Oct 28, 2008[Bottle, 1 year old] Strong, malty aroma is a bit toffeish, earthy, citrus and pine. Strong flavor of malts, toffee, fruits, citrus, earth, grass and pine. Dry, bitter finish. Palate is very thick, very smooth and bitter. BMan1113VR (2752), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA May 27, 2008 Pours with a large, light brown, really thick and creamy head covering a pitch black body. Great retention and really perfect lacing. Aroma is of citrus hops, cinnamon, tangy and toasted toffee elements, and a richness or spiceyness that I can not place. Taste is sweet and very nicely balanced. Strong malty IIPA-Barely Wine hybrid, this beer is in a class of its own. Creamy smooth mouthfeel with light bubbles and a slight warming. On a side note, 61* seems a bit too warm for this beer, maybe 56-58 would be a bit more to my tastes. Great all arounder. It is maltier, sweeter, and spicier than most IIPA’s I am use to; I can’t wait to try more Nogne products. DMRz (218), Durham, North Carolina, USA May 26, 2008 Pours a dark reddish brown with a tall long lasting tan head. Aromas of dates and medicinal hops. Flavors of strong pine hops, dried cherries, and bitter roasted malt. Quite smooth, with well concealed alcohol. This is a very enjoyable beer that seems to be able to fit in as both an IIPA and barley wine. RCL (1443), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA May 26, 2008 Editor’s note notwithstanding, this seems to lean more towards barleywine in my estimation. At any rate, this is one tasty beer. Pine and dried fruits in the aroma. The flavor explodes with dried fruits: dates and apples. Nice.
