craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Mar 29, 2008 bottle. 1st off - not really sure what to categorize this beer as.... ratebeer has it as a IIPA, which is totally off. Nogne 0 labeled it as a barley wine. No way is this a IIPA... moving on to the barley wine... this is the darkest bw I’ve ever seen... it is a very dark brown with a nice thick head. Not until the finish do you get a sense of a barley wine.... almost like an old ale. That’s what I would call it in style. With that said, this is a very tasty beer once it warms up a bit.... if too cold - all the flavors are hidden. I get slight malty and dark fruit aromas... excellent palate - extremely smooth and almost velvet like across the tongue... spicy on the tip and soft on the sides... the english barley wine style comes through at the back of the palate and through the finish.... quite good. Go buy some today (if you can find it)... NobleSquirrel (1094), Chicago, Illinois, USA Mar 29, 2008 Regardless of teh caveat at the end in the editor’s note, this is nothing like an IIPA, aside from the high ABV and hop rate. The chocolate malt comes through nice and strong to give a great malt back bone with smooth roasty notes and obvious C-hop character. Definitely seems very porter-esque to me. Very good, though. taunusmies (276), Finland Mar 28, 2008 Dark brown colour, thick medium-sized off-white head. Fruity, flowery, aromatic smell. Very complex aroma which is built on sweet malts with layers of dried fruits, raisins, hops and turning to warm, roasty and sweet maltiness as time goes by. Needless to say: totally full of character. Mouthfeel is rich and soft, absolutely pleasant (when the temperature is not too cold, of course). Alcohol is well hidden. The negative point is the high price of this excellent brew here in Finland. Blom (390), Odense, Denmark Mar 28, 2008 Hazy orange with a fine head. Hops and alcohol governs the aroma, while the flavours are sweet like candy sugar and alcohol going into an aggressive salty bitterness toward the end. badlizard (2324), Berkeley, California, USA Mar 27, 2008 bottle at Stone. Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Molasses and spice aroma. Dry citrus, molassess, caramel taste with a nice spiciness. zeke626 (301), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Mar 23, 2008 Bottle, thanks to akevitt for sharing. Pours a dark brown body and light brown head that leaves a small amount of lacing. Aroma of fresh, floral hops and malts. Interesting beer - starts like an IIPA, but ends with the complexity of a barley wine. Flavor is all hops at the beginning, but then turns to more malty flavors with hints of burnt toast and citrus. Milk chocolate finish with a coffee aftertaste. Ljunkan (379), Karlstad, Sweden Mar 23, 2008 Updated: Dec 29, 200850 cl bottle @ Bishops Arms, Karlstad, shared with Bananamaniac.
Aroma: Amazing, powerful, with plenty of hops in there. Sweet chocolatelike smell too... a bit nutty.
Flavour: Very complex with typical american hops, citrus, grapefruit. Extremely bitter, but in a well-balanced way... plenty of sweetness, roasted malt, nuts and chocolate.
Palate: Absolutely wonderful... smooth, though the bitterness, and very mellow.
Second tasting. 50 cl bottle @ Bishops Arms, Karlstad, shared with Bananamaniac. Pours a deep brown color with a nice white/beige foam. Quite a lot of yeast particles A wonderful aroma of citrus fruits, hops, notes of roasted malt and chocolate. Flavour is of aromatic citrus hops, grapefruit and elderflowers... some malty chocolate like taste shines through, and it’s very pleasant. Ends bitter, but not extremely bitter (maybe because it wasn’t that fresh this time). One of my favourite beers from Nögne Ö. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA Mar 22, 2008 carmelly with some toasted nuts, chocolate, pine cones, grapefruit and blood orange, and some interesting yeasty flavor. gives it a fresh wet flavor. very tastey. i definitely have "more like a IIPA than a BW" written in my notes, but then I read the disclaimer on the commercial description and now it makes sense.
