Pours a dark brown with a moderately large, long-lasting, dense head that left very nice lacing as it receded. Very pleasant fruity aroma with lots of caramel and some alcohol notes as well. The flavor is caramel up front followed with some fruit and a bit of pepper. Bitter finish with a definite warming from the alcohol also present at the finish. Very good. mybestfriend (262), Gothenburg, Sweden

At first I did not get all that much on the nose - but after a while the aromas opened up - dried fruits (raisins), malt, some spices and liquorice. Flavour is quite sweet and complex - dried fruits, peppery alcohol, malt, spices and salt (which made me think of moist snuff). A good amount of bitterness. The finish is quite dry, roasted and salt. Good one! marcus (1850), Sacramento, California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Mar 10, 2008 This dark brown ale poured with a fluffy tan head. The flavor is malt and toffee with a chalky slightly bitter peppery finish. This beer is not sweet enough to be considered a barleywine, as clarified in the Editor’s note. However, it is an excellent double IPA. Juelze (895), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA

Taste is has a spicy hoppiness to it with the usual barleywine suspects, caramel, alcohol and toffee. Slighty fruit and peppery. Finally, something decent from Nogne. Aroma is alcohol, toffee, and caramel. Taste is about the same. A well-balanced BW. Nogne finally got something somewhat right. pintsize (1042), Austin, Texas, USA

Black pour with a nice creamy white head and super duper lacing. Smell is subtle but has a nice roasted malt aspect to it. Little to no alcohol in the smell and flavor. Flavor has a nice hoppy, malty, barley balance. Overall, another great beer from Nogne. hiddenvariable (194), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 5, 2008 bottle. pours a deep dark reddish brown, with a huge, lasting tan head that leaves a ton of lacing. smells of burnt caramel and cocoa, as well as some roasted malts, plus a lot of citrusy hops and pearlike fruity esters. the malt tastes turn to bread and toffee, but still maintain a lightly roasted note. citrus and floral and earthy hops come out some in the taste, as does a hint of alcohol, which blends well into the overall effect. smooth, but pretty big, bitter finish that lasts a while, with a delicate light balance. medium body, coating mouthfeel, lots of carbonation. this is good stuff. the complexity of the malts prevents the hops from too important to the character of this beer, which i like a lot. the hops are nevertheless there in abundance, and the whole combination provides for a great drinking experience. riversideAK (2670), Shoreline, Washington, USA

Aroma of brown sugar and, wood, pine, and earth hops. I did not get a lot of the sweetness being talked about, as it was mostly pine, earth, and woody bitterness with a slight touch of brown sugar and toffee. Perhaps a touch of chocolate or roast too. Nice long dry finish. Alcohol was hard to find, perhaps slightly warming is all. Very good.
