Fruity, malty nose with dried fruit, wild berries and toasted malt with loads of hops underneath. Malty taste with dried fruit, chocolate, caramel, a hint of smoke, a touch of oak, loads of citrussy, earthy hops in the finish, almost overpowered by the fiery alcohol coming through at the end. Almost full body, balanced sweetness. Bold, powerful and uncompromising effort from one of my favourite brewers. Impressive! lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 23, 2008 Pours basically black with a long lasting creamy head in a snifter. Smell is almost a subtle smoky malt and very little hops at all. Subtle smelling beer. Taste is nice and crisp hoppiness, with very smooth toasty to roasty dark malt flavor hidden in the back. Quite nice and ver drinkable. Some slight wet cardboardiness in the flavor detracted at the very end for me. Beerdedone (1873), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Sweet aroma of citrus and floral hops, caramel, chocolate, pine, and notes of raisins. Flavor is smooth and creamy with caramel, pine, toasted malts, chocolate, and a hint of brown sugar. A unique and decent brew. mirjukka (702), LOHJA, Finland

| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 22, 2008 Pours very dark with a large tan head. Head settles into a thin and lasting layer. Moderately hoppy nose, and some fruity aromas too. Flavor is big. Sweet, mild chocolate, fruity, good mouth-feel. Gets a bit sticky tho as you empty the glass. This is a barley wine, and a good one. I don’t know why it’s listed as a double IPA. I’d like to try an aged bottle. Pinball (2754), Allerød, Denmark

bottle 50cl Strong beer, strong alc. but very soft palate, sort of oily but in a nice way. Taste is a bit too string with too few nuances, fine taste though. Alc. is too dominant but not in a bad way, which might be the case with cheaper beers. As with another of Ø’s beers, it was a lot better after having been in the glass for 10 minutes. a bit too sweet perhaps for my taste, but worth a try. If you like strong & sweet & soft you’ll love it.
cloudy dark brown, thick light brown a bit meessy head.(4->3),
fantastic aroma somewhere between IPA and barley wine. smooth and hoppy and sweet.(5->7). strong alcoholic aroma, barley wine’ish. well balanced except for alc that is too strong.(8->7)

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 18, 2008 Deep brown, thick and clingy light tan head. Aromas burst forth with brown sugar and black tea notes riding currents of sharp pine and grapefruit zest. Room temperature brings out soft wafts of dark fruit as well. Moderate earthy pine and citric bitterness balance on touches of chocolate and dark fruit from start to finish. Full bodied, soft carbonation, bitter warming finish. Call it whatever style you want, it’s choice no matter…. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 16, 2008 Huh, IIPA? This isn’t a standard barleywine, but it seems even further from IIPA... I say American strong ale, but eh! Dark brown with a big tan head. Kind of looks like Angel’s Share. Sweet dark malt. Fruity prunes. A bit of astringency? Slightly vegetal. A thicker viscous or creamy body. Sweet astringency to a stronger dark malt character. Some alcohol. Amarillo? Darkfruit. Some might do this beer some good.
