KimJohansen (6645), Copenhagen V, Denmark Feb 3, 2008 Black with medium beige head. Hoppy aroma along with roasted malt. Flavor is sweet with roasted malt and a distinct hop bite. Alcohol warms you up nice in in the end just as the bitterness kicks in! crizay (1050), Brook Park (was Tampa,FL), Ohio, USA Jan 27, 2008 Deep dark basically black mahogany hue to it and a medium beige head that stays. Aroma is rich and fruity, sugary, caramel, a bit of smoke, dark fruits. Flavor is smokey, dark fruits, a touch of caramel, lots of resin, chocolate. The hops come out as well straight grapefruit rind and citrus. The charred flavor sticks with roastiness up front and then the bitter hop finish mixed with chocolate, really is a complex brew and almost like a brutal HOTD Adam. Full mouthfeel with lots of carbonation. The hops may be there but this is not an IPA, it’s a barleywine with too much bitterness and that’s what kills it. Had this served at exactly 61º. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Jan 27, 2008 Bottle says it’s a barley wine, but the hop presence and beautiful color of deep, ruddy brown, and a very persistent head, tell me that it is definitely more a IIPA than BW. Nose is rich and complex with dried fruit, brown sugar, and a touch of smoke. The flavor is also rich and complex, with a bit more smokiness, but also caramel and fig flavor coming through. Incredibly smooth and no carbonation. Earthy, dry finsh. Exceptional. jsh12bama (335), Alabama, USA Jan 25, 2008 Pours dark brown with thick tan head. Aroma of chocolate, hops and and toffee. Taste light hops and malt. Nice balanced brew. More like a barleywine, similar to Bigfoot or Old Crusty, but not as hoppy. JohnnyJ (1282), Carlsbad, California, USA Jan 24, 2008 Pours a dark orangish brown with amber colored head. Citrus, grapefruit, caramel, chocolate, dark fruit, and a bit of orange. Nice beer with balanced malts with hops, but the hops seemed a bit too harsh and metallic. I think this beer is closer to a barleywine then a IIPA. ratman197 (3135), Arvada, Colorado, USA Jan 23, 2008 500 ml bottle poured a clear dark reddish brown with a lasting amber head. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, carmel, orange, toffee and a hint of chocolate. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of chocolate, pine, tangerine and grapefruit rind with a smooth lingering bitter finish. Very tasty brew, but definitely not a DIPA closer to a Barleywine or American Strong Ale. blankboy (3156), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jan 22, 2008 Bottle. Pours a very deep ruby-brown, almost looks black, with a large lasting foamy tan head -- looks like a Porter! Aroma’s milder then I expected but nice: A variety of hops, some chocolate, alcohol, light toastiness and yeast. Flavour of lightly roasted malt, tons of hops, a touch of chocolate, some alcohol and a long bitter finish. Medium to full bodied, thick chewy mouthfeel. At first I wasn’t sure what you’d call this, it didn’t seem to be a DIPA nor a Barley Wine but halfway through the bottle it did resemble a Barley Wine. Very good stuff! Mangino (1027), Mississippi, USA Jan 22, 2008 Dark brown color, lots of tan foam. Great nose on this one. Sweet and complex, chocolate and dark fruits. Slick and boozy. Kind of thin on the body, the alcohol really dominates the flavor very hoppy and the alcohol and the hops add a somewhat astringent charachter.
