Commercial Description:
Our 100th batch, brewed for the enjoyment of the brewers, but popular demand forced us to release it commercially. Most enjoyable in a comfortable chair in front of a roaring fire.

Recommended serving temperature 16°C/61°F Ingredients: Maris Otter, wheat, and chocolate malt; Columbus, Chinook, and Centennial hops; English ale yeast, and our local Grimstad water.

23,5°P, 80 IBU, 10% ABV.

Editor's note: Even though the label says "Barley Wine" in the States, the brewery says it's brewed to be an IIPA. The American label was a glitch. In Europe it's sold as an IIPA.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown, almost black. Tense tan head with a few frothy bubbles in the mix. Nose is piney hop, light chocolate, grape pop, rich malt. Odd but good. Flavor is caramelized malt, rich fruits are swallowed by a strong bitterness. Richness returns but is tempered by crisp bitterness.

Bottle says "Barleywine Style Ale". Dark brown with monster whipped creamy non- dissipating head. Strong orange aroma. Flavor is strong, strong hops, dark chocolate, bitter. Some pepper and spices, orange peel, light citrus and vegetable compost. Bitter bite dominates. Some alcohol and black licorice. Thick and syrupy, full and rich. Heavy. Interesting beer. Almost too rich, concentrated, and out of whack but worth a try.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown, near black body with a huge, foamy beige head. Copious amounts of lacing. Smell: The aroma is a blending of freshly-peeled citrus fruits and burnt chocolate cookies. Taste: Double Fudge cookies with a reasonable sweetness that blends into an oven-roasted fruitiness and the taste of creosote-soaked citrus hops. A mild smokiness appears midway, as does the taste of hearty nine-grain bread. Finishes dry and bitter with an extra helping of roast. Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: An interesting, unique hrbid beer for sure with plenty to offer and begs (if not requires) to be sipped.

brun øl med bundfad. Duften er grape og chokolade. Samgen er meget humlet og tung. For humlet til mig. Eftersamg varm og bitterhed.

Almost completely opaque black with a medium height brown head. Sweet boozy floral aroma with hints of licorice. Taste is roasty and bitter with a resinous woody edge. My bottle, unlike this page indicates that this is a BWA rather than an IIPA, and I have to agree with the label on this issue. Singleminded bitterness clings to the palate long after the finish. $9/500ml

Bottle: Pours a very deep brown with a burgundy hue in the light. The dark tan head fades a bit, but it’s consistent and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is of rich malt presence, giving it an underlying cocoa and cookie presence. The hops are there, but not that assertive, just giving it a resinous edge. Alcohol is evident as well. Creamy body with dense velvety bubbles. Nice malt character. Bisquity, slightly sticky body. A bit sweet with lots of roasted caramel and mild underlying berry-like fruitiness (elderberry?) There’s lots of apparent alcohol as well. The finish is a mesh of pine bitterness and roasted undertones. Pretty straight forward, lacks depth and balance, but it’s tasty.
