SamuraiArtist (292), portland, Oregon, USA Nov 10, 2007 Bote: Pours a dark cloudy brown with some redhighlights. Thin off white head. Aroma of toasty malts and floral, earthy hop aroma. Flavor is malty and toasty. Cooked caramel and light roasty chocolte and nutty. Moderate hop bitterness with a floral hop finish and moderately dry. brentfeesh (1030), Gadsden, Alabama, USA Nov 8, 2007 22oz bottle. Much darker than I expected. Pours a musty, murky brown color with a wisp of head. Pine, oak, and malt in the aroma with hints of citrus or perhaps even fruit. Fairly heavy aroma though not was strong and forceful upon the nose as you would expect. The flavor has big pine and malt along with plenty of alcohol and wood hints. Full body, creamy mouth feel with a dry finish. I enjoyed this but I definitely think I’ll let the other bottle age. Barley wine this is, I don’t know why some people argue that this is a double IPA. emacgee (1859), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Nov 6, 2007 Updated: Jan 17, 2009Thanks to doclock for this extra. Pours a surprisingly dark brew, practically black in the glass. The head is one to two fingers, creamy, and light tan. The nose is upfront sweet, resiny hops, citrusy, alcohol, . The flavor is a good hop malt balance, leaning more towards an upfront citrusy waxy hop feel, alcohol is there for sure, some caramel. aubreya (676), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA Nov 6, 2007 The color was dark brown, very dark for an imperial ipa. The head was thin, creamy, and medium beige. The aroma was very hoppy, alcohol, aged, and citris. The flavor was extremely hoppy, waxy/bitter at the back of the mouth, alcohol, and grassy. The palate was smooth. The finish was warm and waxy. tjthresh (1740), Greenfield, Indiana, USA Nov 4, 2007 Picked up at Green’s in Atlanta, GA
Pours brown with a dences tan head.
I’m having problems finding any kind of aroma here. Just kind of a mess. Mostly just esters.
There flavor is just kind of mashed together. Lots of hot alcohol. No real hop or malt character that stands out.<br?
Medium body. High carbonation. Astrigently dry finish.
The lable on the bottle says barley wine. Please. Here we say IIPA. Pah----lease!
hellomynameis (794), Mayer, Minnesota, USA Nov 4, 2007 very dark coloured with a tall tight foamy tanish head. Not getting much for aroma. There are a lot of hops that dominate the flavour. Strong and Malty with well hidden alcohol and some roast flavour. I’m really impressed with how drinkable this is. JMFG (1514), Florida, USA Nov 3, 2007 Courtesy I forget, either SoLan or dnsowden. Dark chestnut brown with a broken uneven white head. Aroma is a mix of hops, alcohol, and chocolate, in order of intensity. The chocolate aroma is a nice touch. Taste is more chocolately than expected, but a dark sharp hop character comes out in the finish. The chocolate adds a good moderating nuance to the hops. Floback (333), Naples, Florida, USA Nov 3, 2007 Pours an intriguing black with purple hues underneath a fingernail of purple-ish head. Tight webs of lacing. Nose is dark fruits, i.e. plum and red grape, and resinous hops. Flavors contain more grassy hops, hints of caramel maltiness, and oak wood. Medium carbonation and full body. Hops conceal the alcohol well as the ABV warms the throat. Rounded mouthfeel is comforting and inviting. Aroma and flavor are well-balanced. Great brew.
